1 WELCOME TO THE ASCE 142 ND ANNUAL CIVIL ENGINEERING CONFERENCE Global Civil Engineers: Now and Future Generations

2 As Civil Engineers are trained around the globe they need not only the requisite technical skills, but also a sense of environmental stewardship and an appreciation for the social environment. The technical skills get taken seriously. Do we inspire the sense of Stewardship?

3 David Lapin says: “We do work that matters.” There are 2 sides of us – the instinct and the heroic. Are employers feeding the heroic? We don’t really work just for money.

4 The FUTURE Global Engineer’s Strategic Priorities Taking ASCE’s strategies ONE STEP FURTHER. Presently: Infrastructure Infrastructure Propose practical solutions to improve our neglected infrastructure. Raise the bar Establish educational and legal standards necessary to prepare professional engineers to address the future's most pressing challenges. Raise the bar Sustainability Sustainability Embrace civil engineers' role as contributors to a sustainable world.

5 Infrastructure Infrastructure Propose practical solutions to improve America's neglected infrastructure. No question, we need technical skills. Is a sustainable solution possible without a sincere effort to instill a sense of infrastructure stewardship? Where will that sense come from?

6 Raise the bar Raise the bar Establish educational and legal standards necessary to prepare professional engineers to address the future's most pressing challenges. Technical skills will improve. Will additional coursework inspire and instill a sense of infrastructure stewardship?

7 Sustainability Sustainability Embrace civil engineers' role as contributors to a sustainable world. Sustainability requires inspired, forward thinking professionals dedicated to stewardship of our built and natural environment. Are we the best contributors we can be? Will the Next Generation embrace it?

8 The Global Civil Engineer Sustainability – Wikipedia says: “Sustainability is the capacity to endure through renewal, maintenance, and sustenance, or nourishment...” “For humans…, sustainability is the long-term maintenance of responsibility, which has environmental, economic, and social dimensions, and encompasses the concept of stewardship…”stewardship

9 The Global Civil Engineer Sustainability We are asking for a change in the way we ALL live Far beyond the classic concept of education.

10 The Global Civil Engineer Our Role As Stewards of the Environment 1.Gain Knowledge AND WISDOM 2.Be the Steward and the Voice 3.Assure that the Next Generation Follows BE LEADERS AND MENTORS

11 The Global Civil Engineer Are we the best contributors we can be? Will the Next Generation embrace it? We become better contributors as we strengthen our own communication and leadership skills There WILL be a next generation of enthusiastic stewards.

12 Our part in STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) US is ranking poorly vs. other nations US losing competitive edge on other countries People not understanding or appreciating the technology they use daily.

13 Our part in STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) Outreach activities are just one part Becoming an active community member Be an advocate for improvement

14 Why Civil Engineering Plays A Lead Role Infrastructure technologies among the most readily understandable It is easy to show how important a role civil engineering plays and how the profession helps.

All in attendance VERY interested in the viewpoint of industry. The STEM Sox hold the viewpoint of the STEM professionals, versus businesses.

The Sec. of Labor, Sec. of Transp. regularly appear at events with us We talk to people regularly about infrastructure STEM ED ADVOCACY IS A GREAT WAY TO COMMUNICATE INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS

41 A Coordinated Vision The world is a system. ASCE gives us a home to work together internationally. Locally, we can all work with other STEM professional societies. Integrate outreach into corporate culture and career paths.

42 The Coordinated Vision: Tough Questions Does the present career path of a civil engineers promote this? Are there enough hours in a day? How can we assure that we have this skill set?
