5. 5 Man stood on a pipe wrench with the help of his friend ! He slipped, fell and BROKE HIS ARM ! Check: How tight does this need to be ? Can I achieve it SAFELY with these tools ? UNSAFE PRACTISE STOP ! Hand Tools ! Why does he need to stand on this wrench ? How tight does this connection need to be ? Why didn’t someone say STOP ? If the tools you have OR the way you have to use them is not safe, STOP THE JOB

6. 6 These were “Home made” tools : Improper tools, improperly used. An air tool used for cleaning, hit a man in the eye. Check: Do you have “home made” tools like this ? Do you use tools for a job they were not designed for ? Does this job need to be done with a hand tool ? Hand Tools ! A “Home made” tool waiting for a VICTIM ! A spike was used to remove a cap, there was slight pressure in the drum, ACID sprayed up & hit a man in the eye.

7. 7 The incidents presented are only a few of the incidents that have occurred in Well Engineering - there are many, many more Using an Improper Tool And/Or Improper use of a Tool, will result in : INJURY Hand Tools !

8. 8 Are there Hand Tool waiting for a VICTIM on your location ? Are Hand tools in bad condition ? Are there any “home made” tools on your site ? Is there unnecessary use of Hand tools Do YOU check Hand tools before you use them? Discuss the Hand Tool Incidents presented and those that have happened in your operation. Hand Tools !

9. 9 Discuss: YOU What YOU can do to make your workplace a safer place. Some Suggestions: Inspect YOUR handtools TODAY and if required, repair or replace them. Make sure all Hand Tools on your site are included in your inspection programmes. STOP all missuse of handtools. Is there a safer tool for the job ? (i.e. torque machine) USE the STOP OBSERVATION PRINCIPLES Hand Tools !
