YR 3-4 Hockey activities Sam

Cross Dribble Cross dribbling Set up: Split the group into 4 groups of 4 and put them in four lines behind a cone either end of the hall but facing each other. Place four different cones further out then the starting cones and opposite to each other. How to play: Players at one end will start with the ball/puck and will dribble diagonally to the cone, once they reach the cone they will then go around the cone and dribble again diagonally but avoiding collision with the opposite line they will then reach the other cone they must then go around the other cone before then dribbling half way and passing the ball/puck to the opposite line.

Cross Dibble Progressed Progression: Place players on each cone but instead of dribbling they pass to the player at the cone and follow their pass.

King of the Pitch Set up: Using the hall gives the children individual sticks and a puck/ball. How to play: The coach will first demonstrate the right way to tackle in hockey. He will then give the children their own hockey stick and ball/puck they will then start to dribble around the pitch and try to tackle and knock out other players whilst protecting their own puck/ball. Progression: Make the players who are out able to go in and steel one ball/puck. Make the area smaller. Change the shape of the area. Add rules like swap puck/ball whilst playing.

1 vs 1 Small Games 1 vs 1 small games Set up: Mark out a small but long area with two small goals either ends. Assign two players to a pitch and give them a hockey stick each and one ball/puck between the two. How to play: Once the pairs are ready one player passes the ball to the opposite player. They then must try and express their self with tricks and skills to either get past the defender They must then dribble through the cones at the end to get a point. Once done or the ball/puck leaves the area the game if over the player will then set up again and the other player this time will pass to the opposite side. Progression: Make it 2 vs 2. Change the shape of the area. Make it 2 -1 defenders vs. attackers. Or 2-1 attacking vs. defending. Make the pitch bigger so there two goals either end.

Number game Number game: Set up: The coach divides the group into two teams and numbers them 1-10 or 1 to whatever depending on the size of the group. He then set up two goals opposite end to each other within the hall. He then places a puck in the middle. How to play: The game will start when the coach shouts out the players number they must then run as fast as they can too the puck and try and beat the player and score. Progression: Make it so instead of 1 vs 1 its 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3 e.g. encourage passing. Place a cone in a corner that they have to run around before going to the puck/ball to make it fairer. Tell the participant to lie on their belly’s or back, sit down ect ect to balance the reaction times.

Box Game Set up: coach divides the group into two separate teams and places two goals either end of the hall. The will then have one hockey puck/ball. The coach will also make two squares within the playing area. How to play: The coach will blow his whistle to start the game is the same rules and set up as a normal game but if the players with the puck/ball enter the square they have 5 seconds where they can chose to dribble or pass they CANNOT BE TACKLED WITHIN THE SQUARE. Progression: Make the boxes smaller or make it so there’s only one box. Have a player to stay in the box but when he get the ball/puck he can chose to pass it or dribble I tout and the player who passed to him goes into the box. Remove all boxes. Change the sizes of the boxes.
