3 Gothic Architecture Gothic architecture originated in 12 th century France, and continued into the 15 th century. Gothic architecture is seen in cathedrals, especially in France and England. The Gothic architectural style was developed to bring light into the lives of people that visited the church.

4 Gothic Architecture HEIGHT and LIGHT are characteristic in Gothic architecture. Gothic architects developed new ways to emphasize the height of the church and let light into the church space.

10 Cathedral of Notre Dame. Chartres, France. ca. 1145-1220 Notre Dame means “Our Lady” and refers to the Virgin Mary in Christianity. The Chartres Cathedral holds what was believed by many Christians to be the Virgin Mary’s tunic (a piece of clothing). This tunic is considered to be a sacred relic, and attracted many Christians to this cathedral.

12 Cathedral of Notre Dame. Chartres, France. ca. 1145-1220 The Chartres Cathedral began construction in 1145. Fifty years later, a fire destroyed all but the eastern crypt and west façade. The western façade contains a rose window and two spires. The two spires look very different from each other, because they were built during different time periods.

13 Belle Verriére Window. 12 th century. Stained glass window, height approx. 14’. Cathedral of Notre Dame, Chartres. Chartres Cathedral has over 180 stained glass windows. Stained glass windows are made up of hundreds of small pieces of tinted glass held together by strips of lead.

The Belle Verriére Window shows the Virgin Mary carrying the Christ Child on her lap in the top, central window panes. This window is unique because it has one large image that is made up of multiple panels.
