4 Students visit the US Capitol Visitors Center  The Senate Foreign Relations Committee was established in 1816 as one of the original ten standing committees of the Senate.  The committee has been instrumental in developing and influencing United States foreign policy, at different times supporting and opposing the policies of presidents and secretaries of state. The committee has considered, debated, and reported important treaties and legislation, ranging from the purchase of Alaska in 1867 to the establishment of the United Nations in 1945.  It holds jurisdiction over all diplomatic nominations. Through these powers, the committee has helped shape foreign policy of broad significance, in matters of war and peace and international relations. Members of the committee have assisted in the negotiation of treaties, and at times have helped to defeat treaties they felt were not in the national interest. 5  Dozens of Sam Nunn School alumni in Washington DC volunteer to meet with current Georgia Tech students as they research potential career fields.  Students invite an alumnus to an “informational interview” over coffee or lunch any time during the visit to DC. This is an opportunity to ask your important questions about life and careers in Washington. Sample questions and networking tips are provided.  Learn what it’s really like to work in government, intelligence, consulting, or non-profits.  Excellent practice for your future job search!

6  The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) provides world leaders with strategic insights on and policy solutions to current and emerging global issues. ◦ Feedback from a past participant, Vincent Palacios: “The briefing itself was fantastic. Just being in the city, there was an energy I could feel, and as our host relayed to us, it’s good to know that there are people hard at work in Washington D.C. trying to make a positive impact on government policy. Once I noticed that the flyer said that the CSIS was hosting a briefing for the Sam Nunn School I thought that maybe it might be smaller. Anyways, the close proximity of it all gave it a very professional feel as if we were all in a briefing of actual magnitude. Furthermore, the speakers were really impressive. I could only hope that they are so diverse and well spoken for future students. Individually they each brought a unique specialty to the briefing, that overall combined to give a well rounded presentation on the global trends that are going to shape policy over the next several decades, which is undeniably beneficial to students of international affairs. The fact that one of the senior vice presidents of the CSIS actually spent some time with us was very endearing and a privilege indeed.” Seven Revolutions Clip Click below to watch:
