Robot Knowledge 1. Your definition of a robot? 2. Where does the word “robot” originate from? 3. How many years have robots been around? 4. Do all robots move? 5. What jobs field are robots used in? 6. Name the 5 main parts of a robot and their function? 7. Compare/Contrast the robot functions to humans.

Asimo the robot demo 2011

What is a robot? The word robot comes from a Czech word “ robota” with means forced work. A robot is any machine that moves and performs a task without any human help by sensing and acting on information. A robots basic abilities are 1. movement 2. senses 3. artificial intelligence. Robots go any where people cannot fit or if it is too dangerous for humans. Scientist disagree whether an intelligent robot can be built. Most are meant to replace human work.

Robots take many forms… Robots do work that is dirty. Robots do work that is dull. Spot-welding robot 2008 by Robotworx http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Robotworx-spot-welding- robot.jpg Roomba-robotic vacuum cleaner

Modern robots Modern robots are only about 40 years old. Robots are not the androids that we see on the movies because they are not thinking machines. The first industrial robot was used by GM to stack hot metal parts. Today robots are encountered through our daily lives.

The future of robots Nano technology in the medical field is expanding rapidly. Perhaps by 2030 robots will be smarter then humans as experts have predicted. Some experts believe by 2035 that robots will be able to cook and clean your house. The Robo Cup Project expects to beat the human team for the world soccer championship by 2050. More then 3,000 people are working in different countries towards the Robo Cup project.

The real challenge The robot evolution is presenting challenges not only in inventing the robots, but also to spread the wealth of a robotic workforce evenly; while discovering new jobs for humans.
