2 Review of Conjugating Verbs Draw this chart in your journal and conjugate the verb to swim in the past tense. to swim singularplural IWe You He/She/ItThey

3 What is the present participle? The present participle ends in –ing. When the present participle is used as a part of the verb, it shows continuing action, and it always follows a helping verb (a present form of be). It is sometimes called the present progressive. (am/is/are) squeaking (am/is/are) yodeling (am/is/are) babbling Reminder: What is a helping verb? to be- am, is, are, was, were to have- have, has, had

4 Find that present participle! Dudley is doodling pictures of doodlebugs. Graham is swimming in the river. Hank and Tupper are drinking ketchup for dinner. Wellington is singing a song about ping- pong.

5 Use a present participle For each sentence, change the verb from present tense to a present participle. Hank’s bloated goldfish sinks to the bottom of the tank. Otis dreams about croaking toads. The flowers spring out of the ground. Nate wears deodorant on dates. Eighth graders love English class.

6 You try it! Look through your PCR book. Find as many examples of present participles as you can. Remember, a present participle has a helping verb + -ing form of the verb! –(is/am/are) _____-ing

7 Word Usage- lose and loose lose (verb)= to not know where to find OR to suffer defeat -rhymes with ooze Because Toya was afraid she would lose her tuba, she tied it to her toe. Because he practices six hours a day, Binky never loses at tiddly-winks. loose (adj.)= the opposite of tight; not fastened or tied down -rhymes with goose Tracy suffered fourteen loose teeth when a nearsighted duck that had lost its way collided with her face.
