Two- Factor Theory

Frederick Herzberg In 1960’s Published his two-factor theory Combined: o Lower level needs into one classification (Hygiene or Maintenance) o Higher level needs into one classification (Motivators) Two –Factor theory proposes that people are motivated by motivators rather than maintenance factors

Maintenance –(Extrinsic) Also called extrinsic motivators Motivation comes from outside the person and the job itself o Pay o Job Security o Working conditions o Benefits These factors are related to meeting lower level needs

Motivators – (Intrinsic) Also called intrinsic motivators Motivation comes from within the person through the work itself o Achievement o Recognition o Challenge o Advancement These factors are related to meeting higher level needs

Score Assessment Take the time now to score your assessment Are you motivated more by maintenance factors or motivating factors? o Do you think this will change as you get older? o Do you think it will change the longer you stay at a particular job?
