3 Life as a slave Clothing – Every year slaved got:  Two shirts  Two pairs of pants  One jacket  One pair of socks  One pair of shoes  One overcoat  One hat

4 Life as a slave (Cont…) Food (Per Month):  Cornmeal salt herrings  8 Points of Fish or Pork Housing (12 People per room):  Cabins with no floors (Dirt)  Beds out of straw and old rags  One blanket for everyone

5 Life as a slave (Cont…) Childhood:  Parents could be sold when you were 12 months old  4 years old you could be a babysitter  5 years old they’d start working (Errands, carrying water to field)  8 Years old working on the plantations Religion:  Were not allowed to worship or learn how to read

6 Life as a slave (Cont…) Punishment  Slave could be killed for:  Murder  Burglary  Arson  Assault on a white person Believed strong discipline “Kept them in line”

7 The cruelty was appalling… In South Carolina one slave owner would put nails in a barrel sticking out on the inside of the barrel, then put the slave in and roll him/her down a very long and steep hill. Another punishment slave owners used was to whip their slaves. Other slave owners in Virginia smoked their slaves. This involved whipping them and putting them in a tobacco smokehouse. Some other punishments were getting beaten with a chair, broom, tongs, shovel, shears, knife handles, the heavy end of a woman’s shoe, and an oak club.

11 Excerpts from the book #1 In the final chapter she explains why she wrote the book (She calls herself “The author”  For many years of her life, the author avoided reading upon or [studying] the subject of slavery, considering it as too painful to be [looked at], and one which civilization would certainly live down (end). But since the legislative act of 1850, when she heard, with perfect surprise and [terrible feelings], Christian and humane people actually recommending the capture of escaped fugitive slaves back into slavery, as a duty forced on good citizens,--when she heard compassionate (caring) and estimable (rational) people, in the free states of the North, arguing and discussing what Christian duty could be on this topic, --she could only think, These men cannot know what slavery is; if they did, such an issue could never be open for discussion. And from this gave me a desire to show it in a living reality (Book)”
