2 Why Year 3 matters - The big one!
This year counts for most of the marks towards your degree. 1st year: 10% 2nd year: 40% 3rd year: 50%

3 1st semester 2nd semester Advanced Core Options (2 x 20 = 40 credits)
Special options (2 x 20 = 40 credits) Please check eBridge and module handbooks (or contact module managers), to make sure that you’re aware of the assessment requirements on all of your modules. Attendance will be monitored in all your classes

4 3rd year project (40 credits = 400 hours)
Literature review, design a project, get ethical approval, CRB check, test participants, analyze results and write up the study. Project report (90%) Poster (10%) If you fail your 3rd year project module – you cannot be given a degree that is accredited by the BPS!

5 3rd year project - time Reading the literature 80 hours
Preparing a literature review 30 hours Design and planning 30 hours Meetings with supervisor 10 hours Data collection 120 hours Data analysis 40 hours Report writing and polishing 80 hours Preparing poster presentation 10 hours

SEMESTER 1 Weeks 1–3 Re-establish contact with your supervisor; plan a programme of work for the semester and arrange subsequent meetings. (Apply for CRB check if required Weeks 4–7 Review literature and discuss issues arising in meetings. Week 8 Literature review completed; formulate project design ideas. Week 9 Download and begin completing ethics checklist. Discuss project design and ethics with supervisor and draft project design. Week 10 Agree project design with supervisor and submit it Week Undergo necessary training for data collection Week 12 Submit ethics checklist and risk analysis forms. SEMESTER 2 Weeks 1–4 Main data collection period. Weeks 5–6 Data analysis. Weeks 7–8 Draft report writing. Week 8 Draft report submitted to supervisor. Week 9 Prepare poster. Week 10 Obtain feedback from supervisor on draft report. Week 11 Submit poster; carry out final revisions of report. Week 12 Submit report.

9 Ethics..(new) Please see handbook but in brief
You must arrange a meeting with you supervisor to discuss ethics (as you fill in the ethics checklist) You must document your consideration of the ethical implications of your work and put this in your project design (example in handbook) You must hand the project design in week 10 AND include it in the appendix of your project WITH the ethics checklist, an example consent and debrief form You will have to sign a form to say you have done this when you hand your project in

25 Professional Principles
As a result of student feedback, the Faculty has produced the following professional principles. you are expected to: ATTEND all classes and meetings as required by the department; be ON TIME for classes and meetings; NEW WARNING SYSTEM FOR NON-ATTENDERS AND POSSIBLE REFUSAL TO ALLOW RESIT If there is a good reason why you are unable to engage with your studies, please contact your personal supervisor as soon as possible.  be PREPARED for classes by reading set material, working through examples sheets and reading through notes from previous classes; TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for your assessed work ensuring it is submitted in a timely fashion and free of plagiarism and unfair means; RESPECT other students and teaching staff. Ensure you don’t disrupt the learning of others – arrive at classes on time, switch off your mobile phone and remain quiet whilst the lecturer is talking; REFRAIN from eating and drinking in lecture theatres and laboratories.

26 To ensure that there is a constructive learning environment for ALL students, lecturers and tutors may: exclude late arrivals exclude students who are not prepared for their classes Warn disruptive students that they will be asked to leave if the disruption continues. Students who are asked to leave a class as a result of being disruptive will be required to attend a follow-up meeting to discuss their unacceptable behaviour. Persistent offenders will be dealt with under the existing student disciplinary procedures.

Problems with your course – ask your lecturer or failing that the module manager. You also have the student representative Problems with your project – see your project supervisor You also have your personal supervisor. If you can’t get answers from them or have other questions or problems – me or call in.

SSC meets 4 times per year (twice per semester) Staff and Year Reps (3/4 per year group) Two training events – one run by Student Union and one run internally by previous reps Nomination forms available at end of talk or from departmental office or Student Union. Careers service: They have many events throughout the year (e.g., graduate recruitment events) and offer a lot of support/assistance with job applications, interviews etc.  Note: Julia is now going to be head of the careers service and she may refer you to another member of her team now – but I would recommend that you contact her initially at this point
