8 Location, Location, Location Why is this important? What is the international student used to (Urban China or rural farm town in South Africa) What are they looking for in location or geography (snow, tornados, beach, mountains, Alaska or Florida?) Why should internationals look at GA? The 2014 estimated population for GA was 10,097,343 In terms of race and ethnicity, the state was 59.7% White (55.9% Non-Hispanic White Alone), 30.5% Black or African American, 0.3% American Indian and Alaska Native, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, 4.0% from Some Other Race, and 2.1% from Two or More Races. Hispanics and Latinos of any race made up 8.8% of the population. Georgia is bordered on the south by Florida, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and South Carolina, on the west by Alabama, and on the north by Tennessee and North Carolina. (We have a coastline/ beach!) The northern part of the state is in the Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the Appalachian Mountains system The highest point in Georgia is at 4,784 feet (1,458 m) above sea level; the lowest point is the Atlantic Ocean. Atlanta is a growing cultural and economic center and home to 5,522,942 people and the ninth largest metropolitan area in the United States Atlanta is the primary transportation hub of the Southeastern United States, via highway, railroad, and air, with Hartsfield– Jackson Atlanta International Airport being the world's busiest airport since 1998 Atlanta is considered an "alpha-" or "world city", ranking 45th among world cities and 8 th in the nation with a gross domestic product of $270 billion. Atlanta's economy is considered diverse with dominant sectors including logistics, professional and business services, media operations, and information technology International students will ask about: Great weather in the state of Georgia (humid subtropical climate) Are there tornado’s, hurricanes and earthquakes, snow? 10 Location, Location, Location International students will ask: Is the cost of living is low? Are there employment opportunities after receiving my degree? There are 15 Fortune 500 companies and 26 Fortune 1000 companies with headquarters in Georgia, including such names as Home Depot, UPS, Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines, Aflac, Southern Company, and SunTrust Banks. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Georgia has over 1,700 internationally headquartered facilities representing 43 countries, employing more than 112,000 Georgians with an estimated capital investment of $23 billion Over 75% of the Fortune 1000 companies have a presence in the Atlanta area, and the region hosts offices of about 1,250 multinational corporations. As of 2006 Atlanta Metropolitan Area ranks as the 10th largest cybercity (high-tech center) in the US, with 126,700 high-tech jobs. Two out of four USG research universities are ranked among the top 25 research universities in the nation. 12 UGA’s IEM Plan 2014 Domestic Conferences attended in 2014 OACAC Conference Education USA Forum in Washington DC Summer Institute College Fair at Georgetown in Washington DC High Schools that visited UGA with International students in 2014 International Student Recruitment Abroad for 2014 1.Scandinavia 2014 2.Turkey 2014 3.London UK - 2014 At the Fulbright fair Chenelle had a total of 4 alumni assist at her table for the two day fair. The fair had over 4000 attendees Traveling in consortium with GA Tech, and Columbus State.
