4 Youth Homelessness Approximately 1.3 million homeless youth living unsupervised on the streets, in abandoned buildings, with friends or with strangers. … families with children are among the fastest growing segments of the homeless population… …3 common reasons for youth homelessness… family conflict, economic problems, exiting foster care and other public systems A study by the DHHS found 46% of runaway and homeless youth had been physically abused and 17% were forced into unwanted sexual activity by a family or household member It is estimated that 5,000 unaccompanied youth die each year as a result of assault, illness, or suicide

5 School Identification UY 2012 - 13 Wisconsin school districts identified 2,054 U.S. schools identified 75,940 in that same year 6% of all homeless students are UY

6 McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (2001)  Written to protect the rights of students who are homeless  Law is designed to:  provide equal access to educational services  reduce barriers to enrollment, attendance, and academic achievement
