4 Terms  Compulsory - A course needed in order to graduate. There are 6 compulsory courses required for graduation.  Prerequisite - A course a student must pass before enrolling in a more advanced course  For example:  Science 10, Geometry, Measurement and Finance 10 & Numbers, Relations and Functions 10 are pre-requisite/co-requisite: Foundations Math 110  Foundations Math 110 is a pre-requisite to Physics 112.

6 Graduation Requirements a) Complete the requirements of grade 9/10 b) Achieve at least 17/20 credits, including 6 compulsory courses  Credits are counted during grades 11 and 12 towards graduation  Students take 5 credits a semester and there are 2 semesters a year c) Pass 5 courses at the grade 12 level d) Pass the Computer Literacy Requirement (met by BBT 9) e) Successfully complete the English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA)

7 6 Compulsory Courses 1. English 111,112,113 (one of) ( 2 credit course) 2. English 121,122, 123 (one of) ( 1 credit course) 3. Financial and Workplace Mathematics 11 OR Foundations of Mathematics 11 (1 credit course)

Science (one course) from any of the following courses: Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Introduction to Environmental Science 120, Physical Geography 110, Automotive Electrical Systems 120, Introductory Electronics 110, Robotics and Automated Technology 120 5. Modern History 111, 112, or 113 OR FI (French Immersion) Modern History 111 or 112 6 Compulsory Courses Continued

9 Fine Arts Development: Visual Arts 110/120, Music 112, 113, 122, Theatre Arts 120, Graphic Art and Design 110 OR Life Role Development: Individual and Family Dynamics 120, Co - op Education 120, Outdoor Pursuits 110, Phys. Ed. Leadership 120, Wellness Phys. Ed. 110, Entrepreneurship 110, Reading Tutor 120 6 Compulsory Courses Continued 6. One course from the Fine Arts/Life Role Cluster:

10 Course Levels Level 1 Course numbering ends with a 1 ie: English Language Arts 121  Designed for students with an exceptional talent and interest in the subject  Excellent study skills  Minimum mark of 80% in previous course to be successful in level 1 courses

11 Course levels Level 2 Course numbering ends with a 2 ie: English Language Arts 112  Very good study skills  Average to above average ability and interest in the subject  Recommend a mark of 70% in previous course

12 Course levels Level 3 Course numbering ends with a 3 ie: English Language Arts 113  Designed for students who are interested in the basic practical aspects of the subject.  Level three courses are accepted at some institutions, but not at university.

13 Course levels  Not assigned as level 1, 2 or 3.  (Some “0” level courses meet the requirements for post-secondary entrance, but others do not.) Level 0 Course numbering ends with a 0 ie: Computer Science 110

14 Options to courses in the classroom Independent study  A prescribed course that a student works independently on with the supervision of a teacher. A student may earn one independent study in either grade 11 or 12.

15 Challenge for Credit  Students have the opportunity to gain a credit based on prior learning that would be congruent with the outcomes of one of New Brunswick’s courses. A student may earn two credits through challenge for credits.  Examples: Royal Conservatory of Music Cadets

16 On-line courses  The Department of Education now offers a number of courses on-line. Students wishing to take these courses are required to work independently under the supervision of a school mentor.

17 French Immersion Requirements French Immersion students will be eligible for a FI certificate upon graduation by completing the following courses: Successful completion of grade 9/10 FI courses Grade 11: FI Language Arts 110 or FI (E level 1) Language Arts 110 and FI Modern History 111 or FI Modern History 112 Grade 12: FI Language Arts 120 or FI (E level 1) Language Arts 120 and FI World Issues 120

27 Reminders  Check to be sure that you have all compulsory courses required for graduation.  You are required to plan for a full course load each semester, so please choose the appropriate electives with a view toward your career goals.
