According to the AH&LA (American Hotel and Lodging Association – formerly the AHMA) there are several, not necessarily exclusive, categories of hotel and lodging property types.

3 Commercial or Transient
These properties offer temporary accommodations for travelers and business people Most hotels fit into this category, including those located near airports and those in urban business centers

5 Convention These large hotels have extensive facilities and equipment for hosting meeting and conferences The layout of these hotels often separates the convention areas from the accommodations areas Convention and non-convention guests may be serviced separately

Owners may use for a portion of the year and rent for other times of the year Differs from “time share”where the owner owns for only a specific time period

14 Casino Hotels A hotel in which a casino or other gambling/gaming outlet is the primary profit center The hotel accommodations are typically to support the on-site gambling Indian casinos and states with recent changes in gaming laws have spread this type of hotel to areas other than Nevada and Atlantic City

Often with kitchen and living spaces Typically attract longer-term guests and families

Considerably greater facilities (fitness centers, spas, shopping, entertainment, upscale restaurants, etc.) Year-round resorts, individual season resorts, spas and health resorts, urban, beach, timeshare, golf, casino, tennis, etc. Cater predominantly to the leisure market, although resorts have ventured increasingly into the convention market as well
