Methods Collect courses and trainings based on reviewed organizations’ websites Review of collected courses based on the key focus Focus on recent courses (2013-2014) Likely to be more courses from these organizations that are not presented on their website Capacity building courses for integrating SD into planning and implementation

Categories used to describe courses Category-1: Courses that give insight on high- level procedures/processes for SD planning and implementation Category-2: Themes, tools and methodologies Did not include courses: – covering only a specific tool without an integrated environment/development perspective – too narrow in the thematic or methodological scope Capacity building courses for integrating SD into planning and implementation

Results In total, over 1,000 courses were reviewed 55 courses were found within the first category (2013-2014) 134 courses were found within the second category (2013-2014) Capacity building courses for integrating SD into planning and implementation

Courses focusing directly on SD planning What type of courses are there? – Broad policy framework, for example: Sustainable Development: Idea, Process and Goal (UNITAR) Policy Instruments for Low Emissions Development: From Design to Implementation (WBI) Meeting the Millennium Development Goals: Results-Based Management for Sustainable Development (Danida) Integrated Sustainable Coastal Development (SIDA) Inclusive Growth Policies (AfDB) Greening the Growth (WBI) Green Growth and Sustainable Development Goals - A Development Agenda for Post-2015 (ASEF) – Theme-based integrated framework, for example: Training Course on Designing and Implementing Solar Energy based Livelihood Projects for Rural Communities (TERI) Trade, Energy and Climate Change (UNITAR) Resource security and governance issues: challenges and opportunities (TERI) Advocacy Training Workshop for LDCs in Achieving MDGs as Part of the Implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action (UN ESCAP) Energy Sector Strategies to Support Green Growth (WBI) The Climate Change and Rural Development Nexus (GIZ) International Symposium on Sustainable Cities: Empowering Local Governments through Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing (UNOSD) Capacity building courses for integrating SD into planning and implementation

Courses focusing on themes, tools and methodologies Capacity building courses for integrating SD into planning and implementation What type of courses are there? – Themes, for example: Governance of Extractive Industries (UNITAR) Sustainable Communities Course (UNEP) Economics of Climate-Resilient Development (WBI) Green Energy and Carbon Markets (Danida) Organic Agriculture and Products in Development Countries (Danida) Efficient Energy Use and Planning (SIDA) Regional Workshop on Eco-Industrial Clusters (ADB) – Tools and methodologies, for example: TRACE: How to Use the Tool for Rapid Assessment of City Energy (WBI) Designing and Implementing Successful Water Supply and Sanitation Utility Reform (WBI) Environmental Mainstreaming (Danida) Procurement Strategy Development (UNDP) Low Carbon Development: Planning & Modelling (WBI) NAMA-Training (GIZ) Some courses were relevant and interesting but were targeted to the private sector (e.g. WRI, EBRD)

Conclusion Very few courses focused directly on SD planning, especially from a policy maker’s perspective There are courses in which SD is integrated into current issues and topics like Green Economy and Climate Change, Resilient Development Large number of courses dealing with budgeting, procurement, financial issues, parliamentary process that could be relevant for SD planning and implementation but lack SD perspective or focus Capacity building courses for integrating SD into planning and implementation

Way forward Designing targeted courses for policy makers at the government level for implementing, monitoring SD strategies Try to mainstream SD into sectoral courses (so many), and not create something new but work with what is out there (very specific but well done), if first route than result is rather generic Post-2015 SD agenda (option focused only on future, and not current strategies) Capacity building courses for integrating SD into planning and implementation
