2 2 Sustainable development goals Rio+20 underscored the importance of the MDGs and their achievement Recognized importance that SDGs could play, based on Agenda 21 and the Johannesburg Plan of Action, coherent with and integrated in the post-2015 development agenda Resolved to establish an intergovernmental process to develop global SDGs to submit a report to the 68th GA – open ended working group still under discussion Requested relevant UN system bodies to support Regional Commissions to collect and compile national inputs Committed to mobilizing financial resources and capacity for the SDGs

4 4 SDGs/Post 2015 Development Agenda Need to avoid duplication and ensure complementarity In the region, opportunity for coherence and complementarity - principles and core dimensions dovetail In Africa- partners supporting the processes – AUC, ECA, AfDB, UNDP Effective, broad-based, bottom-up inclusive consultative process Ultimately, both processes will need to come together - Africa’s specific circumstance - one set of goals Timeframe should take into account intergenerational equity issues
