1 Four Kinds of Sentences
Unit 1 Lesson 2

2 Objectives: Students will:
Identify declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences. Use correct punctuation.

3 Declarative Sentences
It tells something. It ends with a period. Examples: Deserts are dry. You are now in 4th grade.

4 Interrogative Sentences
It asks something. It ends with a question mark (?). Examples: Are deserts always hot? How old are you?

5 Imperative Sentences It gives an order. It ends with a period.
Examples: Always complete your homework. Sit down.

6 Exclamatory Sentences
It expresses a strong feeling. It ends with a punctuation mark. Examples: How hot it was! How exciting that was!

These mounds are called sand dunes . Declarative Do sand dunes stay in the same place ? Interrogative This is a terrible sandstorm ! Exclamatory or Declarative

Look for lots of camels on the program . Imperative Why are camels so useful in the desert ? Interrogative Camels can go for days without water . Declarative

How gorgeous it is here Have you heard of the Painted Desert Look at the picture on the card Can you guess the reason for its name The rocks glow in shades of red, yellow, blue, lavender, and white At times the hazy air looks pink or purple Try to imagine that What an incredible sight it is ! ? . ? . . . !
