OpenURL linking & LinkFinderPlus Presented by: Joost Gerdes Product Sales Manager Endeavor Information Systems

27 The problem to solve Libraries provide access to lots of unconnected content platforms Users don’t want to switch platforms and type in metadata to find full text, but link to it directly from where they found it Librarians want all of their content to be used to prevent unnecessary document delivery or interlibrary loan and save time and money Needed: an efficient way of finding the location of the article the user has access to (the “appropriate copy”)

28 The OpenURL solution: what it does The OpenURL standard was developed to solve this so-called “appropriate copy problem” Using OpenURL linking will direct the user to the location of the copy of the article that is accessible for that user, stored locally or on line (i.e. the appropriate copy for that user)

29 The OpenURL solution: basics At the core is a tailored list of journals with their locations and date range (the “knowledge base”) Science Direct Ref. Link to Lancet … Lab. Econ. – www.sciencedir… Lancet – www.sciencedirect.co. Lancet – sciserv.somewhere.nl Lancet – www.thelancet.com Lingua – www.sciencedirect… Lithos – www.sciencedirect… … The Lancet.com OpenURL containing metadata

30 The OpenURL solution: basics List is different for every library The list is part of a software application called a Link Resolver Elsevier’s OpenURL link resolver is LinkFinderPlus, on site or hosted

31 Example: linking from EV2 to ScienceDirect

32

33

34 Facts & Figures Pre-populated knowledge base: - 22,000+ target journals - 1700+ target sites (journal platforms) Available soon: “Extended services”: links to library OPACs, Internet search engines etc. ScienceDirect, Embase.com and Engineering Village 2 are OpenURL compliant For other OpenURL compliant platforms go to http://www.endinfosys.com/prods/lfp_resour ces.htm

35 LinkFinderPlus: Summary LinkFinderPlus offers users one-click access to all full text articles available to them Avoiding unnecessary document delivery or inter-library loan saves time and money Competitive pricing
