By Jane Woo, Jay Kim, and Sun Lee India and Islam

India before Islam Gupta Empire was in control Religion, education, mathematics, art, and Sanskrit literature and drama were most significant achievements Expanded into astronomy, medicine, and mathematics Indian Numeral system was widely put to use

India During Islam Was under the control of the Chola Empire During the middle ages (12 th to 13 th centuries C.E.) Chola empire was prosperous Economy mainly based off of maritime trade Trade routes of Chola were used at “highways” by Islamic missionaries in India to spread out to southeast Asian continents Expanded main through conquest and trade

Affects of Islam on India Muslim traders spread the Indian numeral system around the world Lower castes were drawn to Islam; mass conversions to Islam from lower classes Started to undermine power of the higher castes Provoked a response from Hindu leaders by making cults that included equal rights for all castes (so that they could win back the unhappy lower castes.)

Affects continued… Arts were heavily influenced by Islam Muslim, Persian, and Turkish architecture style influenced many of the buildings in India Beautiful mosques were erected Literature and calligraphy art of Muslims was adopted somewhat by Indians The introduction of Islam to India would later result in the Pakistan-India split of 1947

How Environment Affected Islam Expansion in India The tough terrain such as the Hindu Kush Mountains and the Himalaya Mountain Range thwarted many attacks from outsiders. Also, the terrain caused extreme regionalism in India and split India up into various little kingdoms There was no single UNIFIED force that blocked out Islam i.e., Kingdom 1 could reject Islam but Kingdom 2 could accept it, as opposed to an entire empire rejecting Islam

Developments/Changes in Social Structure The lower class people, oppressed by the rigid caste system of the dominant Hindu religion in India, were attracted to the Islam faith promising salvation and equality for all. The Hindus became alarmed at the fast rate that the lower classes were converting Set up god cults that (at least temporarily) erased lines of gender and caste to bring back the popularity of Hinduism and prevent people from converting to Islam.

Downfall of Chola Dynasty The power of the emperor in each generation of kings grew weaker and weaker Regionalism made it hard for the dynasty
