Biodiesel Production Based on Waste Cooking Oil: Promotion of Co- operation Between Food Industry and University Faculty of Mechanical and Manufacturing University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia Batu Pahat, Johor

Background Azhar Food Industries Sdn Bhd Small scale company producing potatoes chip and Crisps for Local Market. The Products are sold all over the country Large amount of cooking oil are used everyday Used cooking oil need to be disposed Harmful to environment and difficult to dispose Reprocessing into biodiesel will turn it to something useful

The Biodiesel Plant

Opportunities for Azhar Food UTHM has proposed to Azhar Food Industries a simple biodiesel plant that can convert waste cooking oil to biodiesel. Azhar Food has accepted this as one of the ways to overcome their used cooking oil problems and as an opportunity to work with university’s researcher. Azhar Food also sees this as a new areas that they can explore and maybe a new opportunity for business. They have spent a lot of money to ensure an environment friendly disposal used cooking oil, and this new way can benefit them in term of cost and usage of waste and also saved the environment

Opportunity to University 1. University researchers see it as a community service and opportunity to put experties to useful use for the community and environment. 2. Opportunity to try out the plant design and put it to test. 3. Save the environment and also inform the public about the goodness of converting waste to useful product. 4. It is a green project and sharing of knowledge between industry and university.

The Way Forward The design of the plant is small and can be easily install at Azhar Food Azhar Food technicians will be trained to operate the plant and this provide technology transfer from university to local workers Azhar will do maintenance and upgrading with the help of the university and experts from the university Azhar Food can offer to undertake biodiesel conversion to other food factories surrounding its plant and thus help to conserve environment by providing assistant to dispose used oil beneficially at a low fees to cover the cost

Benefits to others The plant is fabricated locally and this provide business to local. The university provide advise and technical expertise to the fabricator including control equipment and other necessary components for the plant. The fabricator is also advised on testing and installations and this is also a form of technology transfer from the university to local companies. Technicians and fabricators are trained on special instrument and equipment.

Other Benefits Biodiesels are used on pumps and transport used by Azhar Food. University researchers will have opportunity to collect more data on the biodiesel plant and improve the design. More postgraduate student can be produced University will also try to expand the biodiesel plant to other food industries outside Batu Pahat.
