1 SCCOOS K-16 Educational Outreach Building on the Existing Infrastructure of the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence SCCOOS Governance and Planning Meeting Oct. 18-19, 2004

2 COSEE is a national network of 7 regional “Centers of Ocean Sciences Excellence” – Funded primarily by NSF/OCE with additional funding from NOAA, ONR, US Navy – Overarching mission is to forge strong links between the ocean research and education communities – Potential to grow to 21 centers with budgets up to $1.5M/year

3 – serving as a catalyst for partnerships between scientists and educators. – establishing a robust network of ocean science educators at both the regional and national levels. – taking a leadership role in the future of US ocean science education. COSEE has focused on:

4 We are fortunate to have two COSEEs in the Southern California Bight region that can help provide the underpinnings of a strong Education component for SCCOOS: – CA COSEE: SIO, CA SeaGrant, MATE and LHS – COSEE West: UCLA, USC, USC SeaGrant, LA Unified School District

5 CA COSEE is planning to hire a part-time Education Coordinator who will: – Interface with Education Coordinators at other RAs – Provide oversight and coordination for programmatic elements – Oversee planning for an education “portal” on the SCCOOS website
