3 What is it? The Extended Essay is: –An independent research/investigation on a topic chosen by the student in cooperation with a supervisor (Teacher-Advisor) in the school –No more than 4000 words –Approximately 40 hours of work by the student –Approximately 4-5 hours of work by the Teacher- Advisor

5 Relating the EE to the IB Diploma: The final grade for the Extended Essay is put onto a matrix and crossed with the final grade for Theory of Knowledge. Students can earn up to 3 additional points towards their IB Diploma.

7 The role of the Teacher-Advisor: To provide students advice and guidance throughout the research and writing process (approximately 3- 5 hours) To read the best draft of the essay and provide comments (but no edits) To conduct the viva voce interview with the student To provide a final report/predicted grade

9 Eight Phases to the Extended Essay (as outlined in the Student/Teacher-Advisor Contract) Phase One (February – March) –Choosing a topic –find a Teacher-Advisor Phase Two (March – May) –Begin research –Discuss the topic with Teacher-Advisor Phase Three (May – September) –Conduct all research, reading and collect necessary data

10 Phase Four (September - October) –Discuss research –Write detailed outline Phase Five (October – December) –Write best draft Phase Six (December – January) –Teacher-Advisor reads draft and meets with student Phase Seven (January-February) –Final revisions and submission Phase Seven (February- March) –Viva Voce Interview with student and Teacher-Advisor –Teacher-Advisor Report submitted with predicted grade.

11 Key Points for Teacher-Advisors and Students Students cannot expect work submitted to their Teacher-Advisor to be returned to them in less than 10 days. Teacher-Advisors should return work to students within 14 days of it being submitted to them. If a student who does not meet the deadlines of the Essay Timeline (including the paperwork submissions at the end of each phase), the Teacher-Advisor may remove the student from his/her Extended Essay Caseload. Teachers must contact the Extended Essay Coordinator regarding concerns that he/she does not want to address on the Extended Essay Student/Teacher-Advisor Contract
