2 I.B. Extended Essays Students will pick a subject within one of the following groups. To find a complete list of allowable subjects, consult the I.B. Vade Mecum

3  The Extended Essay is a 4,000 word in-depth study of a limited topic within a subject.  It is a requirement for all Diploma candidates.  It is an opportunity to engage in independent research.  It is a chance to get bonus points towards the Diploma total.  It should take about 40 hours to complete.

4  Choose a subject that you enjoy.  You may choose any IB subject, but it is usually better to choose one that you are studying.  You may not write a Group 2 essay in a language you are studying as A1. (e.g. If you are studying Spanish A1, you may not write an extended essay in Spanish B)

6  You will be assigned a mentor based on the subject that you choose.

7  Your mentor may give you limited assistance.  The topic should allow you to collect information, analyze and evaluate in depth.

8  Narrow the focus of the topic down to a research question or hypothesis  Get ideas from previous essays  Make sure that the question is challenging, but capable of being answered.  Keep referring back to the research question as you write the essay.

13  Avoid Plagiarism! Cite all of your reference material correctly!  Keep a list of all references from the beginning of your research.  Aim to be 90% finished by August of your 12 th Grade year.  Meet the deadlines!
