DO NOW Choose a celebrity from these pictures and describe them in writing: Elija una celebridad de estas imágenes y describirlas por escrito?:

Remember When? Answer these questions in your notes: 1.Draw a particle diagram of a solid, liquid, and gas. 2. A 1-gram sample of which substance in a sealed 1-liter container will occupy the container completely and uniformly? (1)Ag(s) (2)Hg(l) (3)H 2 O(l) (4)H 2 O(g) 3. Which set of properties does a substance such as CO 2 (g) have? (1)definite shape and definite volume (2)definite shape but no definite volume (3)no definite shape but definite volume (4)no definite shape and no definite volume

I can identify chemical and physical properties. Puedo identificar las propiedades químicas y físicas. I can explain the difference between chemical and physical properties. Do Now (4 minutes) Objectives (2 minute) Lecture (15 minutes) Sodium Bicarbonate Lab (15 minutes) Guided Practice (15 minutes) Exit Ticket/Wrap-up (6 minutes) AGENDA Wednesday, 9/5/2012 Gold Day! OBJECTIVES

What is a Property in Science? ¿Qué es una propiedad en la ciencia? A property is used to identify an object’s characteristics and behavior. In chemistry there are two kinds of properties: physical properties and chemical properties.

Chemistry Properties Physical A characteristic that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. Chemical The ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more other substances.

Physical Properties Physical PropertyExample ColorSilver-grey Aluminum Shaped into sheets? Malleable Formado en las hojas? maleable Platinum sheets Drawn into wires? Ductile Dibujado a los cables? dúctil Gold Wire Melting points or boiling points Los puntos de fusión o puntos de ebullición Sodium chloride melts at 1074 K. It boils at 1686 K. That is hot! Conductor of heat or electricity? Conductor de calor o electricidad? Iron (Fe) pans are great at conducting heat and electricity. Solid Calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) is a poor conductor of heat and electricity. Density (mass/volume) Densidad (masa / volumen) The density of ice is: 0.9167 g/cm³

Chemical Properties Chemical Property Example Forms new substances when combined with other substances Formas nuevas sustancias cuando se combina con otras sustancias Often changes color or odor when combined with a different substance.

Guided Practice

Properties of Copper Physical (P) or Chemical (C) Property? Reddish brown, shiny Easily shaped into sheets (malleable) and drawn into wires (ductile) Forms new substances when combined with nitric acid and sulfuric acid Density = 8.92 g/cm 3 Melting point = 1085 degrees Celsius Forms a deep blue solution when in contact with ammonia Good conductor of heat and electricity Forms green copper carbonate compound when in contact with moist air Boiling point = 2570 degrees Celsius

Sodium Bicarbonate Demo Materials: – Goggles – Sodium bicarbonate NaHCO 3 (powder) – Acetic acid CH 3 COOH (vinegar) – Glass beaker for water – Dish soap – Paper towels

GUIDED PRACTICE Answer questions on the paper you picked up We will answer question 1 together as a class

Quote of the day: “Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science.” ~Edwin Powell Hubble, The Nature of Science, 1954 Thoughts?
