Fundamentals of Engineering – Honors – ENGR H191 Lecture 7 - Cadkey1 Question of the Day (and More!) The first book of riddles published in English appeared in 1511 – one of the riddles was this: “What thing is it, the less it is the more it is dread?” ANSWER: “A Bridge” The information from this slide and the next 2 was obtained from ‘To Engineer Is Human’ by Henry Petroski.

Fundamentals of Engineering – Honors – ENGR H191 Lecture 7 - Cadkey2 Question of the Day – Round 2 The Brooklyn Bridge, opened in May 1883, was called the “Eighth Wonder of the World” – who was the main engineer to oversee the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge? ANSWER: Washington Roebling (His father began the project but died soon after it was started)

Fundamentals of Engineering – Honors – ENGR H191 Lecture 7 - Cadkey4 Question of the Day – Round 3 Where is this bridge – also designed by Washington Roebling – located? ANSWER: Cincinnati, OH!

Fundamentals of Engineering – Honors – ENGR H191 Lecture 7 - Cadkey5 Topics For Today Today – Graphs using Excel Wednesday/Thursday – Missing Lines and Views and Drawing 3 Views with CADKEY Thursday/Wednesday – Hands-on Lab: Spot Speed Check – Traffic Engineering

Fundamentals of Engineering – Honors – ENGR H191 Lecture 7 - Cadkey6 Graphs and Graphing Types of graphs bar charts, pie charts, scatter plots Characteristics of good graphs titles, axis labels, ticks, legends plotting experimental and calculated values Tabulating and graphing data in Excel and editing for good presentation

Fundamentals of Engineering – Honors – ENGR H191 Lecture 7 - Cadkey7 Types of Data Data values can be either numeric or character Numeric data may be either continuous or categorical Character data are categorical

Fundamentals of Engineering – Honors – ENGR H191 Lecture 7 - Cadkey8 Types of Graphs Scatter plots are used when all variables being plotted are numeric and continuous Bar charts and pie charts are examples of graph types in which at least one of the variables is categorical

Fundamentals of Engineering – Honors – ENGR H191 Lecture 7 - Cadkey9 270 college students were surveyed to find whether they had part-time jobs and how much they earned. Results: How can we present these data graphically? Example: College students with jobs
