2 Fundamentals of Planning
Planning is a skill required by all managers. Planning involves a significant amount of time and effort. Planning forms a base for short-term needs and long-term vision.

3 Planning Planning entails a process of determining the appropriate allocation of precious resources to ensure success of a facility. It can be accomplished these ways: A group of people (a gang in a room—AGIR) Authoritarian technique (one man on a mountain—OMOM)

4 Planning for Existing Facilities
Facility planning for an existing facility entails planning for all events to be held in the facility and then monitoring all events to determine what changes need to be made in the future. (continued)

Areas of concern: Money (payroll, expenses, accounts receivable) Personnel (operational hours, who works which events, developing job descriptions, hiring personnel, training) Scheduling (games, events, number of participants, multiple facilities) Space management (allocation of space)

Who wants the facility? What facility do they want and why? What will meet the greatest current or future needs? What will cause the least amount of financial harm or inconvenience? Always start the process by reviewing the who, what, where, when, and why questions.

7 Planning Process The first step is to analyze existing internal and external constituents Possible additional steps: Conduct a feasibility study. Develop a potential budget. Organize various planning committees. Set realistic goals and objectives. Study political and financial marketplace. Generate community support. Bring in the right people before the project starts.

There are numerous types of sport facilities to consider: Stadiums Arenas Gyms Community sport centers Sportsplexes Domes Golf courses Water parks

9 Business Plans After examining what type of facility to build, do the following: Examine potential site plan and business plan. What elements would you include in the business plan for a new arena?

Running the day-to-day operations of the facility Examining what type of facility will meet a given need or objective and working out the justification for building or leasing Determining what facility to build or lease and justifying the need for the facility

11 Discussion Questions and Activities
What daily events at a stadium do you think you need to plan for one day in advance, one month in advance, and one year in advance? What steps would you take to convince residents that a large sport facility is a good thing to build near their homes, and what could be their objections? Who should be on the planning committee to build a minor-league baseball stadium?
