ACADEMIC TUTORIAL Extended Essay Writing

TODAY WE WILL AIM TO TODAY... ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise (20 mins) Reading through 2 candidate answers identifying AO1 and AO2 aspects before deciding which is a grade A and which is a grade E Making note of examiner feedback ACTIVITY 2: MSM model answer (20 mins) Making your own model answer – cut and stick exercise ACTIVITY 3: WMM model answer (20 mins) Completed the gapped handout to produce a model answer from the WMM ACTIVITY 4: Extended essay writing (1 hour) Have a go yourself... Self-reflect on your own essay

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise Read through the 2 candidate answers for the questions ‘Outline and evaluate the Multi-Store Model of memory’ (12 marks) Try to identify each candidates attempt at AO1 descriptive skills and AO2 evaluation skills Which of these two answers to you think gained a grade A and which do you think gained a grade E? 10 MINS

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: E AO1: The description of the MSM does little more than identify the names of the stores, communicating little knowledge and understanding. AO1: The description is basic and closest to the lowest mark band, so 2 out of 6 marks.

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: E AO2: This is very weak evaluation. Simply saying there is lots of research isn’t of any value, and the study that has been mentioned has not been used effectively – how does this support MSM?

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: E AO2: This is a superficial point – why do lab studies lack ecological validity?

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: E AO2: Another superficial evaluation point, lacking specific information about such studies, and in what way this supports the MSM.

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: E AO2: It is creditworthy to contrast the MSM with an alternative model, but any description of the second model is not creditworthy – in other words the focus must be evaluation (AO2) rather than description (AO1)

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: E AO2: The evaluation might look plentiful but all of it is superficial and therefore receives 3 marks out of 6. Total = 5 out of 12 marks, a grade E answer.

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: A AO1: The first paragraph provides a very brief description of the three stores of the MSM

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: A AO1: In the second paragraph information is given about how information is transferred between the three stores. This information is reasonably detailed and accurate.

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: A AO1: Overall the description is fine in terms of accuracy and detail, demonstrating relevant knowledge and understanding. However, there is no information about that each of the stores actually does, which is fairly crucial to understanding the model. Even though the presentation of material is clear and coherent, the important omission means the AO1 score is 4 marks out of 6.

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: A AO2: The third paragraph identifies one weakness with the model and provides considerable explanation and support for this point.

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: A AO2: In the final paragraph a second weakness is identified which is again well-elaborated.

ACTIVITY 1: Marking Exercise GRADE: A AO2: The evaluation section contains just two points (a very narrow range) but in considerable depth. This is going to receive 5 marks out of 6 because, for full marks, a third criticism is needed. Total = 9 out of 12 marks, just makes a grade A.

ACTIVITY 2: Marking Exercise Read through the sentences which make up the model answer for the question ‘Outline and evaluate the Multi-Store Model of memory’ (12 marks) Try to identify which are most likely to be AO1 descriptive sentences and which are most likely to be AO2 evaluation sentences Then organise them into the perfect essay... 20 MINS

ACTIVITY 3: WMM model answer Completed the gaps to have a model answer for the essay, ‘Outline and evaluate the working memory model’ (12 mark) 20 MINS

ACTIVITY 4: Extended essay writing Over to you... Apply what you have learned to the essay Outline and evaluate research into the effects of anxiety on the accuracy of eyewitness testimony (12 marks) 45 MINS

ACTIVITY 4: Extended essay writing Outline and evaluate research into the effects of anxiety on the accuracy of eyewitness testimony (12 marks)

ACTIVITY 4: Extended essay writing Outline and evaluate research into the effects of anxiety on the accuracy of eyewitness testimony (12 marks)  Make a clear point/ state whether it is a strength or a weakness  Link point back to the question/ topic area i.e. why is this relevant to the effects of anxiety on EWT  Present some supporting evidence – pick out the most relevant parts of the research, do not fall into the trap of simply describing everything you know about it  Link evidence back to the question/ topic area  State a however/ similarly – again with supporting evidence if you have some

ACTIVITY 4: Extended essay writing Use the self- reflection sheet to see what you think you did well 5 MINS
