P RE -R EADING D ISCUSSION Do you think you have a good memory? What are you good at remembering? What are you poor at remembering? How does modern technology affect the way we learn and study? Do you think the Internet makes students today better or less informed than students 50 years ago?

R EAD & C OMPREHEND Read the article ‘Is your memory online?’ and do the questions independently When you are finished exchange your answers with a friend take out a coloured pen mark your friend’s paper according to the answers

F ORM AN O PINION 1. Make 5 discussion questions about the reading. 2. In small groups, take turns asking and answering the questions. 3. Compile (put together) the MOST INTERESTING 3 questions from your group 4. Write these questions on the board

F ORM AN O PINION In addition to your questions, we can also add these questions EVERY TIME we read an article to help us form an opinion of the article Did anything surprise us in the article? What? Why? Did the author give enough support to make his/her opinion or point clear? Before you read the article, what was your opinion of the topic? Did the author make you change your opinion?

R EVIEW S UMMARY Here are some questions to get you started: Which sentence gives the topic of the article? Find 4 or 5 key words or phrases and underline them. What conclusion did the authors reach? Use your answers to the above questions to write a summary with your group – you have 7 minutes! (answers on the next page)

R EVIEW S UMMARY (C ONT ’ D ) Which sentence gives the topic of the article? “Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.” Find 4 or 5 key words or phrases and underline them. research experiment remember the information transactive memory memory is changing What conclusion did the authors reach? memory is changing not becoming worse

R EVIEW S UMMARY (C ONT ’ D ) In the article ‘Is your memory online?’ Williams, Jones and Fox (2012) discuss research about Internet users and memory. There were several research studies that looked at whether or not Internet users use their memory differently. Researchers found that Internet users remember where to find information better than what the information is. The authors conclude, therefore, that people are developing strong transactive memories but it is not clear if people have weaker memories.

W RITE A C OMMENTARY What is a commentary? it is a type of writing that demonstrates an opinion or a response to something you’ve read How do you write a commentary? combine the most important part of the summary with your most interesting opinions Let’s try: Can you make the summary in only one or two sentences? Which are your most interesting opinions? Write a one-paragraph commentary of the reading.

W RITING A C OMMENTARY (C ONT ’ D ) Shortened summary: In the article ‘Is your memory online?’ Williams, Jones and Fox (2012) discuss research about Internet users and memory and conclude that although memory is changing, it is not necessarily getting worse.

W RITING A C OMMENTARY (C ONT ’ D ) My opinion (for example) I mostly like the article and would recommend it shows young people aren’t less intelligent or worse at remembering than older people maybe one more experiment could help show this?
