Logistics & Expectations Logistics Please check your audio. –Speakers working? –Microphone? Check out the “mute” webinar tool. Make sure you are muted. Even quiet background noises can be distracting. When you want to speak, unmute yourself, introduce yourself, and re-mute. We do want you to share! Locate the chat box from the webinar control panel. Expectations This is an interactive session, participation is key! Use the ‘raise hand’ feature to indicate, you would like to share Feel free to use the chat-box to type in questions or responses, however we highly encourage voice discussion You will be asked to complete a poll You may be asked to share with the group

Mimi Daniel, David Luiken Minneapolis Adult Education GEAR UP Episode 1: Essential Science Toolkit

Introductions David Luiken Minneapolis Adult Education GED and ELL Teacher Mimi Daniel Minneapolis Adult Education GED Teacher GED Supplemental Service Grant Coordinator

Objectives By participating in this webinar you will: Gain a better understand of GED® Science Test Learn new ways to scaffold science instruction Explore a science lesson plan that incorporates all three science content topics Navigate GED® science instructional resources

Agenda GED® Science Test Overview – (Jeopardy Mimi Style ) Scaffolding Sample Lesson Plan Instructional Resources

Content Topics Focusing Themes Science Practices MiscellaneousBonus 10 20 30 End Game GED® Science Jeopardy

Content Topics- 10points What are the three science content covered on the GED® Science Test and what percent does each content account for?

Answer for 10 points Life Science 40% Physical Science 40% Earth & Space Science 20% Note: Each of the content topics have additional subtopics.

Content Topics- 20 points What are a few subtopics of each of the science content topics?

Answer– 20 points Life SciencePhysical ScienceEarth & Space Science Human body/health Organization of life (structure & function) Evolution Molecular basis for heredity Relationship between functions and energy intake Energy Flows in ecosystems Chemical properties and reactions related to human systems Conservation, transformation, and flow of energy Work, motion, and forces Interaction between Earth’s systems and living things Earth and its system components and interactions Structure and organization of the cosmos

Science Topics- 30 points What percent of the test will be presented in item scenarios in which a single stimulus serves to inform two or three questions?

Answer for 30 points 50% The other 50% of the test will be discrete questions (Stand alone questions).

Focusing Themes- 10 points What are the two focusing themes covered on the GED® Science Test?

Answer for 10 points 1.Human Health & Living Systems 2.Energy & Related Systems

Focusing Themes – 20 points What is the purpose having focusing themes for the GED® Science Test?

Answer for 20 points To ensure the test covers a wide range of important scientific topics while drawing focus to a distinct subset of ideas within each content topic. Science content that falls outside the spheres of these themes will not appear on the test.

Focusing Themes – 30 points Identify one or two concepts from human health and living systems and one concept from energy and related systems

Answer for 30 points Life SciencePhysical ScienceEarth & Space Science Human Health/Living Systems Human body/health Organization of life (structure & function) Evolution Molecular basis for heredity Chemical properties and reactions related to human systems Interaction between Earth’s systems and living things Energy/Relate d Systems Relationship between functions and energy intake Energy Flows in ecosystems Conservation, transformation, and flow of energy Work, motion, and forces Earth and its system components and interactions Structure and organization of the cosmos Adapted from Assessment Guide for Educators, chapter 2

Science Practice – 10 points True or False- Once science practice is aligns with every question on the science test?

Answer for 10 points True! Each question on the test aligns with one of the eight science practices. It will be extremely helpful to incorporate science practices into each of your lessons

Science Practices - 20 points What are the 8 basic science practices measured on the test?

Answer for 20 points Comprehending Scientific Presentation Investigation Design Reasoning From Data Evaluating Conclusion with Evidence Working with Findings Expressing Scientific Information Scientific Theories Probability & Statistics

Science Practices – 30 points What type of skills are defined in the science practices?

Answer for 30 points Reasoning skills- skills necessary for reasoning in a scientific context

Miscellaneous- 10 points How much time is given to complete the the GED® Science Test?

Answer for 10 points 90 minutes

Miscellaneous- 20 points What is the relationship between science topic content and science practices?

Answer for 20 points The content topics are designed to provide context for measuring defined skills within the science practices. Each question on the test will contain one science content and one science practice

Miscellaneous- 30 points What skills are being assessed by the science questions?

Answer for 30 points Textual analysis and understanding Data representation and inference Problem solving with science content

Bonus- 10 points How much writing are students expected to do for the science test?

Answer for 10 Two short answer

Bonus 20 points How much time is allotted for the short answer questions on the test?

Answer for 20 points There is no designated time The short answer questions are not separated from the rest of the test Students must regulate their time It is recommended that students spend no more than 10 minutes for each short answer

Bonus – 30 points What background information should you find out about your students before you prepare your science lesson?

Answer for 30 points How long have they been out of school Have they attended school in the U.S. How much school have they attended in the U.S.

Questions?

What is scaffolding? Definition In the field of education, the term scaffolding refers to a process in which teachers model or demonstrate the problem-solving process, then step back and offer support as needed. Theory The theory is that when students are given the support they need early on when they're learning something new, they stand a better chance of using that material independently.

Take the Poll

Scaffolding Examples Examples of Scaffolding Tap prior knowledge: use K-W-L charts. Get students to realize they know more than they think they do. Pre-teach vocabulary: Teach both academic and content vocabulary Use visual aids Give students time to talk: think-pair-share; turn-and-talk Ask a lot of questions and review Provide opportunities to write Simplify the language and work toward more complex readings. Teacher thinks out loud and demonstrates activity

Scaffolding Benefits Why Scaffold Instruction?? Provides opportunities to expand lesson into higher-level tasks Provides the structure for students to practice and demonstrate critical thinking skills: interpret, infer, analyze, evaluate Helps teacher develop focused objectives

Scaffolding Benefits Creates multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate critical thinking within the lesson Presents concepts in multiple formats. Students are more motivated and successful Link abstract idea to everyday problem

Check-in Questions on scaffolding?

Science Lesson Plan

Check-in Give examples of scaffolding in David’s lesson plan

Vocabulary Vocabulary useful for the test
