Negros Polyculture F Objectives F Compare various polyculture methods F Determine which are preferred by farmers

Negros Polyculture F Tilapia as biomanipulators in shrimp farming in Negros Island – Green water technique F Tilapia stocked in supply reservoir F Increases profitability F Reduces disease

Negros Polyculture F Tilapia – Saline tolerant hybrid O. hornorum x niloticus F Tilapia stocked at 15 – 30 g/m 3 ( 10-15 g @ 15,000 -20,000 / ha) F Harvested at 300g m 3 F Induces bloom of green algae (mostly Chlorella) F Probiotic effect from skin slime? F Bioturbation of substrate F Tilapia consume organic wastes

Research Overview F Workplan 10 - Sustainable polyculture of tilapia and shrimp –Involves studies/investigations in Thailand, Mexico, Honduras and the Philippines –For the study the Philippines, a survey of tilapia-shrimp polycultures was conducted F Workplan 11 – Sponsorship of ISTA6 on September 12- 16, 2004 in Manila, Philippines dubbed as “New Dimensions in Tilapia Farming” –This was a well-attended event where the Philippine government through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) extended full support to this activity to showcase the country’s progress on tilapia farming.

F Workplan 12 - Use of tilapia as biomanipulator in shrimp farming –this involves the analysis of accumulated data by a cooperative in Negros Island to investigate the cultural management practices of tilapia-shrimp polyculture especially on the control of disease problems like Vibriosis (a disease caused by luminous bacteria Vibrio) and White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) Disease in the farming of Penaeus monodon.

Outreach activity F Training of students: Arrangement for the field practice of three undergraduate senior students in the Visayas (San Carlos City, Negros Occidental and Iloilo) from April to May 2006 was made possible. The culmination of this activity by the students is the making of a poster and a completion of a field practice report to be presented in a defense seminar. F Involvement of the people from the private sector and academe was made possible through this project

Attendance of five students and four project staff at the 5 th National Shrimp Congress in Bacolod City, Phillipines – an opportunity especially for the students to establish contact and get experience to attend a national industry conference while finishing their degree
