1 Lines of Practice (Renglones de práctica): What is it?
Lines of Practice is a small group activity intended to provide additional practice to students prior to reading decodable text from the core program. Students will have the opportunity to practice reading letter sounds and words several times. Use the appropriate decodable text. (Students should be able to read connected text with 90% accuracy.) The Oregon Reading First website has a template that can be used to develop lines of practice for your decodable text.(Tab B-ELL, tab Spanish enhancements. Explain how to get to the page where the template is.

2 Why use Lines of Practice (Renglones de práctica)?
It provides additional practice on sound/spellings that the student is likely to encounter in their decodable text. It provides plenty of opportunities to practice automaticity with word reading. It ensures that students will be able to read the decodable text successfully.

3 Who will benefit from lines of practice activities?
Students that are on the strategic or benchmark range and need additional practice on sounding out words prior to reading the decodable text. Intensive students that need to review sound spellings before reading whole words. (Note: If students are not firm on sounds, syllables, and word reading, then do not provide them with sentence or text reading at grade level. Students will need to use below grade level Lines of Practice and decodable text.

4 Developing your own lines of practice: Things to consider
Choose sounds/spellings from the decodable books or the anthology that you know students will have difficulty reading. Choose words that have the new sound/spellings students read in isolation in the Sounds Tab. In Word Review, choose words that students may have just recently learned, and that may have sounds/spellings that are difficult to sound out for additional practice. Make sure to include sentences that include words from the “Reg. Words New” tab and “Reg. Words Review” tabs. Make sure the Lines of Practice matches the reading selection students will read after completing the activity. Have participants read the Directions for the Lines of Practice briefly. Then discuss any questions. Model activity.

5 Activity Watch the modeling of the Lines of Practice Activity.
Using the examples in your binder, practice the activity in small groups. Using the paper strips on your table, make up a Lines of Practice activity that matches the decodable text you are currently teaching.

6 Behavioral Strategies
Model and state student expectations during lines of practice. Monitor students/Provide feedback. Have students read to you. Praise appropriate expectations.
