- 1 - FAR 2009 Using the Faculty Activity Report In 2009 at ASU

- 2 - Agenda Brief History What can I use FAR for? Data conversion Uncategorized data Current Status Near Future Support Next Steps

- 3 - Brief History 2002 – CLAS created the Faculty Activity Report to evaluate their faculty 2006 - UTO enhances and releases FAR for the entire university 2007 – UTO enhances and outsources FAR to Digital Measures 2009 – UTO moves FAR back to the original system in response to user feedback and the need to have more control over the system’s capability.

- 4 - What can I use FAR for? Faculty can upload curriculum vitae and activities and submit their work for evaluation. Chairs or Dept. Heads (or their designees) can view and evaluate submitted data from the faculty College contacts (typically department admins) can change/add people’s roles in FAR, add data, start evaluations and extend evaluation deadlines. Personnel Committee members review evaluations

- 5 - The Conversion We converted all of the data from previous versions to the current version of FAR. You will be able to see all data back to 2000. You will be able to edit data for the current evaluation year (2008 until March) Where there was a 1:1 correlation between a DM field and a FAR field, we did a straight copy. Where we could take a ‘best guess’, we copied data from a DM field to the most likely field in FAR

- 6 - Uncategorized Data In the conversion, when we couldn’t safely say where some data should go, we put it in a catch all field. If you don’t find your data in the expected field, check your catch all field – you can copy and paste data from there to the place you want it to be. Uncategorized data has been created in these areas: –Consulting –Faculty Development –Intellectual Contributions in Media/Arts –License and Certifications –Memberships –Non-credit teaching –Past History

- 7 - Current Status As of January 2009, FAR is a re-establishment of the 2002 FAR system, with data from the original system and the DM system. FAR data is linked to the ASU directory and the new My Profile available in MyASU. FAR reporting is limited to activity reporting per faculty member FAR is not connected to the library system The system is up and running at https://far.asu.edu

- 8 - NEAR Future We see this as the first step, the foundation for making the system much more robust and adapted to your needs. In the near future you will see: FAR working with library data Robust reports being housed in EPM (the data warehouse).

- 9 - Support Faculty can contact the Help Desk (965-6500), or use the feedback button in FAR, for help in adding data to FAR The Feedback Folder will be eliminated in February, and all help inquiries will go to the Help Desk exclusively. Unit Contacts will be trained 1:1 by UTO Changes to someone’s access will be handled by the unit contact. UTO has a level 2 triage to handle ‘system-down’ situations and access problems a unit contact cannot resolve that will be contacted by the help desk. It will also handle data entry questions the help desk cannot resolve. Step-by-step instructions for Faculty, Chairs and Unit contacts are available at the help center. (help.asu.edu)

- 10 - Next Steps Have your Unit Contact review and adjust who has access to FAR in your area. Roll out FAR to your department –We can come do a “dog and pony show” –We can attend one of your regularly scheduled meetings –You can roll it out without us! FAR Roadmap is available. –This is a word doc that you can edit to express your expectations for your FAR will be used in your academic unit. An editable copy is at http://www.asu.edu/courses/oasis/FAR/Roadmap.dochttp://www.asu.edu/courses/oasis/FAR/Roadmap.doc Step-by-step Instructions are available at help.asu.edu – (Search for “FAR”)
