OUTLINE FOR A RESEARCH PROJECT “Begin at the beginning, and go on till you come to the end: then stop.” Don’t get ahead of yourself. Go back and forth as needed.

1. GET AN IDEA Your idea can come from anywhere. Start with a topic you find interesting. Don’t try to do everything with one study.

2. REVIEW THE LITERATURE What are the relevant theories and constructs? What has been found so far? What methods have been used?

3. DEVELOP YOUR HYPOTHESIS Remember what makes a scientific hypothesis: falsifiable, precise, rational, parsimonious. It’s okay to be wrong. Decide on a population of interest. Variables must have operational definitions.

4. DEVELOP THE METHOD Decide which research method is appropriate. Select a sample. Develop your research protocol. Locate resources Obtain IRB approval.

5. COLLECT THE DATA Be organized and professional. Follow the research protocol. Do a pilot study if possible.

6. ANALYZE THE RESULTS Descriptive statistics - organize and summarize scores Inferential statistics - generalize from sample to population Context of justification Context of discovery

7. INTERPRET THE RESULTS Was the hypothesis supported? Be cautious and conservative. How well can the results be generalized? What are the limitations? What are the implications?
