3 Course Intention Introduction to using sound in theatrical applications. This class will not make you an instant sound designer or audio technician. You will have a basic understanding how sound and audio systems are used in theatre and understand the workings of sound reinforcement and playback

4 Course Intention After completing this course you will Understand the operation of commonly used pieces of equipment Understand how equipment interconnects Understand how to produce cues and run a show You will also obtain a foundation in Design concepts and the design process Electronics and electricity Acoustic theory

5 Course Requirements Attendance and Active Participation Numerous in-class projects Reading in assigned materials (textbook and handouts) Three class assignments Cable testing / soldering Effect creating and editing Equipment setup and operation Quizzes Exam Sound studio design final project

6 Attendance and Participation Attendance is required Excessive absence and lateness will effect your grade There is no “making up” class If you miss class YOU are responsible to find out what you missed If you miss a test or project due date, there will be no make-ups

7 Reading Reading implies studying as well I expect you to absorb the material presented in reading assignments They are not there simply to use up paper

8 Class Assignments Cable testing / soldering Learning soldering techniques Using a multi-tester Understanding wiring techniques Effect editing Using Cool Edit Pro to create specific sound effects Equipment setup and operation Setting up a complete sound system, and running a small show

9 Final Exam and Quizzes There will be one written exam given near the end of the semester. This exam will cover material from the entire class There will be quizzes given after the completion of each topic. The quiz will cover material only from the previously discussed topic.

10 Final Project Sound studio design This will be very time consuming and lengthy Start working on it ASAP
