Computer communication B Discussion

How to organize a presentation and a discussion General idea  I would like to have a mix of presentation and discussion  Integration of extra literature that can be found  Create your own structure to discuss the articles  Make comments and criticisms if necessary  Explain your conclusions  Cite the literature used

Discussion: ERP ERP: Enterprise Resource Planning  They have been compared to LMSs (learning Management systems)  ERP systems can manage in principle all (at last some) of the functions of a company or foundation  ERP systems are used in place of isolated components with the goal to achieve integration  ERP contain MODULES: for example for production, general logistics, to manage the financial part, administration of the employees, the selling part and costumers management  There is a database where all the data can be stored

Discussion: CRM CRM: Costumer Relationship Management  Operational: support of processes relative to costumers (service, management of costumers feedback)  Collaborational: all the company departments share the costumers feedback to ameliorate the service for the costumers  Analytical: research and edit costumers data

Discussion: SCM: Supply Chain Management  The chain: idea, planning, production and delivery  Collaboration with thirds like supplier van primary products en wholesaler  Supply and demand management  EDI: Electronic Data Interchange For business purposes much information is used and sent in the form of documents (example: shipping bills) EDI is a a collection of standards for the digital exchange of information The standards are based on the structure of these documents

Working together: SCORM SCORM: Shareable Content Object Reference Model  It`s a collection of formats for internet-based education  The communication between a scholar and the teaching system is structured (sequencing)  The presentation of the information to the scholar is central: The subdivision in independent “content objects” Their implementation The relative order of presentation  SCORM is an intermediary between the content and the learning management system (LMS)

Online working: discussion IMS: Global Learning Consortium http://www.imsglobal.org/  IMS: Instructional Management System  Non-profit organization  Supports the use of learning technologies worldwide  Goal: modularity of learning systems and of contents via standardization  They contributed to SCORM

AICC: Aviation (All Encompassing) Industry CBT Committee http://www.aicc.org/ It is an association of experts in computer- based e-learning (for aviation) CBT: Computer Based Training It creates main lines and formats for computer-based education

Working together: NESTOR Does Nestor fulfill Hall’s criteria?  High availability: must be usable for different types of users  Scalability: the infrastructure should be able to adapt to changes in terms of number of students and changes in the infrastructures  Usability: easy to use and easy to understand  Modularity:  Stability: should be a stable system  Safeness: safe for data

Nestor1 It’ s a large learning platform Made to support the management of courses  Communication: announcements, e-mails, gradebook  Information: study manuals, literature, teaching materials  Organization: sign up students, separate in groups etc. Used as well for the organization of courses, with specific functions  Enlarged discussion forum with several possibilities  Chat function  Teaching material offered in a certain order  Material prepared by students can be discussed and judged. But see topic viewed from Ullman & Rabinowitz

Nestor2 Useful as well for education in the distance  Foreign students at RUG  Rug students who are abroad  Foreign students who are abroad (education possibly done by Rug mentors  Students in different countries (education possible by mentors who re in different countries) Protected environment: important for documents with authorship rights Links to accessible sources Integration of multimedia is easy

Nestor3 Support for teachers via the Rug: helpdesk, databases etc. Nestor individual education-support track (NIOT) http://www.rug.nl/uocg/ondersteuning/nestor/niot Freedom of realization within Nestor: positive and negative points No large faculty of university policy for NESTOR It is still unclear if the opening of Nestor is good for the organization of the courses A good idea would be to have a survey among teachers and students on the possibilities to use Nestor?

Next lecture We will address the topic of INTRANET Literature  R. Brandsma & P.Spijker, 2003: Intranet als praktisch communicatiemiddel. Alphen a/d Rijn: Kluwer.  W. Hendrikx, 2004: Handboek intranet. Een praktische gids voor overheid, non-profit en bedrijfs leven. Den Haag: Sdu uitgevers.  H. Koeleman e.a., 2002: Intranet voor de communicatieprofessional.
