Calc III Math Lab Spring 2008

Introduction Teaching Assistant names Policies –Online: http://wiki.mathlab.mtu.edu/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page#Lab_Policies –Honesty, Integrity Verify completion of registration Log on to lab computers (if not, send to Pat Krogel in CEC, Fisher 234)‏ Check to see if you have a WebCT account (newcourses.mtu.edu) –email Jason D. Vivian with name and course information if you don’t

Weekly Assignments Weekly Lab Assignment Long Quiz Short Quiz (except this week)‏

Lab Assignments Lab Assignments: –Done in the program “Mathematica” (v 6.0)‏ –Should/can work with a partner –Download online from WebCT (not before the day of the lab)‏ –Make sure your bar code is on the assignment. –Turn in to a Teaching Assistant in the labs, failure to turn in to a TA will result in point deduction. –Labs will be scanned and an email receipt will be sent to you. You will also receive a receipt when the lab is graded. SAVE THESE EMAILS.

Quizzes There are two types of quizzes- Long and Short The labs are set up so that the Assignment prepares you for the Long quiz, which prepares you for the Short quiz. –Quizzes are taken IN WebCT under the Quizzes link –Quizzes are meant to test your Mathematica skills, so use Mathematica to take the quizzes –Getting help is not allowed, especially on the short quizzes

Quizzes Long Quizzes Can be taken from home Can be taken multiple times during the open period Consist of 2 or more questions pertaining to information presented in lab that week Short Quizzes Can only be taken ONCE There is a time limit (usually 8 min) so you need to know what you’re doing before you begin MUST be taken IN THE LABS –You will need a password from a TA Consist of 1 or 2 questions

Grading Lab Assignments are worth 10 pts a piece. –All Assignments count towards your grade –Lab grades can be checked at http://www.math.mtu.edu/mathlab/grades http://www.math.mtu.edu/mathlab/grades –There is also a link to this on WebCT –Consult your TAs if a grade is missing, etc. Quizzes –EVERY Long Quiz counts towards your grade –The TOP 7 Short Quiz scores count towards your grade (you can skip 4 throughout the semester, if you choose)‏ –Quiz scores can be checked using the WebCT grades link

Math Lab Set-up The math labs are fairly informal. Students may seek help during any open hours, however it is recommended to come at your selected time to receive adequate attention from TAs and a guaranteed computer. At the very least, please come in during another hour of your course Hours by course taught can be found online http://wiki.mathlab.mtu.edu/mediawiki/index.php/Sche dule:Lab#Main_lab_schedule Hours with TAs listed, along with weekend hours can be found at : http://wiki.mathlab.mtu.edu/mediawiki/index.php/Schedule: Consultants

Getting Started Decide if you will have a partner & download lab from WebCT. SAVE TO DISC –If you just open, it will save in a temporary directory, which is deleted each night. Open the information and example cell(s) (blue arrow)‏ Evaluate a cell –Click in a cell and hit “Shift” + “Enter” –The first time you do this, an “initialization cell” will pop up. Click YES to initializing. If you don’t, your lab will not run properly. –You should see your barcode above the exercise section

Working through the Problem There will be a few questions which you will need to answer. To do so, click underneath the question cell and hit “Enter” to create an Input cell. Here you can type your text. Finding help: –Help Browser –“?” function –“Information and Examples” section of labs –TAs

Using Mathematica Mathematica is a program to help you complete math-related problems. –Like programming, text needs to be entered in a specific manner. –Example: Cos[2], not cos[2] or Cos(2)‏ Some text rules: –Functions get capital letters and square brackets [ ] –If it’s NOT a function, it gets parentheses ( )‏ –Example: Cos[x]+(x-2)*Tan[x^(5-x)]

First Lab Assignment In this assignment you will learn how to –Define and plot functions –Evaluate functions –Enter special characters –Use help menus Pointers –The Palette menu can be found under File→Palettes. –The Information and Example cells contain most everything you need. Read through that before consulting a TA. The Lab is due next Wednesday before 10pm and the Quiz is due before Wednesday at 10pm.

First Quiz Don’t forget your quiz! There’s only a Long Quiz this week, but it still needs to get done. Pop-up blockers may prevent you from seeing the quizzes. When taking a quiz- save answers. –Click FINISH –Click the Okay button on BOTH pop-ups –Click “View Scores”

Reminders Turn in lab assignments to a TA; make sure your barcode is displayed and SIGN the lab. Check your assignment grades weekly – (http://www.math.mtu.edu/mathlab/grades)‏http://www.math.mtu.edu/mathlab/grades –If you’re missing a grade, consult your TAs Get your assignments done ON TIME (otherwise it’s a 0). When closing Mathematica, select File->Exit (Can’t just hit the X)‏
