Please CLOSE YOUR LAPTOPS, and turn off and put away your cell phones, and get out your note-taking materials. Today’s daily quiz will be given at the end of the hour. The questions will come from the review material covered in today’s lecture.

Teachers: If you hand back Test 4 today, tell your class you will review it with them in class on Thursday when you do the review lecture on Chapters 6, 7, 10, & 11.

Please CLOSE YOUR LAPTOPS, and turn off and put away your cell phones, and get out your note- taking materials.

Two evaluation surveys – Please take time to do both! You should have received two separate survey email requests: One was from Professor Foley (via Pearson) – This one is an evaluation of the Math 010/110 Teaching and Learning Center structure. This will help us evaluate our course setup, software, tutor lab, TAs, and online grading/assignments/learning aids. The other was from Dr. Chris Bendel, MSCS dept. chair -- This one is an evaluation of the teacher of your Math 010 or 110 class section. This will give feedback to the department and to your own teacher about how you rate the effectiveness of instruction in your particular class section. Your feedback on both of these surveys will be very helpful to us in evaluating and improving our teaching methods and the Math TLC program – THANK YOU!!!

Math 110 Final Exam: Comprehensive – covers the whole semester Worth 200 points (20% of course grade) 45 questions Test period is one hour and 50 minutes Practice Final is worth 10 points and also has 45 questions and unlimited tries. Your best score on the practice final will also earn up to 20 extra credit points on the final. The practice final is due at the scheduled start time of this section’s final exam. IMPORTANT NOTE!!! To get access to the practice final, you must have submitted all three final exam review homework assignments and have scored at least 80% on each one.

Calculating what you need on the final exam to earn a specific letter grade: 1.There are 1000 total course points, with 240 left to earn. 2.Multiply your current overall % score in the online gradebook by 760. 3.Subtract that number from the points needed for the grade you want to get (use grade scale chart). 4.40 of those remaining points are on HW, Daily Quizzes and the Practice Final: (24 points left on HW, 6 pts on daily quizzes, 10 on Practice Final). Estimate how many of those points you expect to get and subtract that from the number you calculated in step 3. 5.Divide the result of Step 4 by 2. This is the percentage score you need to earn on the final exam, after partial credit and bonus points are added in.

Example: 1.Suppose your current overall percent score is 79.2% (a high C+). 2.Multiplying that by 760 points gives 0.792*760 = 602. 3.To move up to a B-, you need 800 – 602 = 198 points. 4.If you get 100% on your remaining HW and average 75% on the quizzes and 80% on your best practice test, that would be 24 + 4 + 8 = 36 points. 5.That leaves 198 – 36 = 164 points that you’d need to get on the final. 6.Your total % score on the final would then need to be 164/200 = 82%. (i.e. if you got a raw score of 70%, plus a total of 12% back on partial credit + practice final bonus, you’d be right at 80% overall for a course grade of B-.) 7. You’d need 194 points on the final (97%) to move up to a straight B, but you’d have to score lower than 114/200 (57%) to drop below a C+.

Final Exam Review Materials: There are three review homework assignments. These are each worth 8 points, vs. the usual homework assignment of 4 points. Unit 1 review homework (Chapters 1, 2, 3) Due at the start class tomorrow (Wed., May 6) Unit 2 review homework (Chapters 4, 5, 8) NOTE: You must get at least 80% on the Unit 1 Review before you can start the Unit 2 review. Due at the start of class on Thursday, May 7. Unit 3 review homework (Chapters 6, 7, 10, 11) NOTE: You must get at least 80% on the Unit 2 Review before you can start the Unit 3 review. Due at 8 a.m. next Monday May 11 (first day of finals). Practice Final Exam NOTE: You must get at least 80% on the Unit 3 Review before you can start the Practice final. Due at the start time of your scheduled final exam period.

More info about the Practice Final: The practice final has 45 questions, as does the regular final exam. The questions will NOT be exactly the same as those on the regular final, but they will be similar in content and are distributed across sections the same way as on the regular final. Each time you take the practice final you will get a different set of questions. EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: Your highest score will earn you that percentage of 20 extra credit points on the final, so it will pay off if you can find the time to take it more than once. You CAN stop the time clock on your practice final by closing the window without submitting the test. You can then come back and finish it later, and any answers you’ve already entered will be saved. REMINDER: You must get at least 80% on all three Final Exam Review HW assignments before you can start the practice final. Completing those HW assignments to 100% will prepare you much better for the final, however… And it will get you the full 8 HW points for each one (24 total), so you’ll have more of a cushion going into the final exam.

Final Exam Review, Part 1

Part 1 of the Final Exam Review HW covers: -Chapter 1 (Operations on real numbers) -Chapter 2 (Linear equations & inequalities) -and the first few sections of Chapter 3 (Graphs of lines, slopes, intercepts) Make sure you look over your graded worksheet from TEST 1 as part of your preparation for the final exam.

Teachers: Go over problems that students in your section need work on, especially the word problems from Chapter 2 and any problems they had a tough time with on Test 1 as determined by your item analysis. I’ve attached review slides on the subsets of the real number system, which almost all students will need to be reminded about. Giving the daily quiz at the end of the hour will probably be a good idea today, since much of it is on the real number system subsets.

Sets of numbers: Natural (counting) numbers : N = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...} Whole numbers : W = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4...} Integers : Z = {... -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3...}

More Sets of numbers: Rational numbers : the set (Q) of all numbers that can be expressed as a quotient of integers, with denominator  0 Irrational numbers : the set (I) of all numbers that can NOT be expressed as a quotient of integers Real numbers : the set (R) of all rational and irrational numbers combined NOTE: Q is a subset of R I is a subset of R but Q and I have NO members in common

Teachers: Insert any additional screen shots of Test 1 problems, or any other notes/problems you want to review with your students today.

You should now open your laptop and work on Final Review HW 1 until it’s time to take the Daily Quiz. This assignment is due at the start of the next class session, and you need to score at least 80% to get access to the next assignment.

Please open Quiz Review 1. You may use your yellow formula sheet, or ask the TA for a pink sheet if you don’t have yours with you. Remember to turn in your answer sheet to the TA when the quiz time is up. You will have access to the online calculator on your laptop during this quiz. No other calculators or cell phones or notes may be used.
