Paris Commune Paris Commune: Good Subject for Three (3) Reasons: 1) Had formal networks: Paris National Guard 2) Paris National Guard: Organized along Neighborhood lines 3) Interaction between National Guard and Neighborhood: Exposes formal/informal interaction

Paris Commune History of the Paris Commune (718) After a series of French military defeats at the hands of the Prussian army, which came after a decade or more of growing economic inequality, a Republic of Paris was proclaimed in September 4, 1870. French Defeat and the Liberation of Paris After the French surrendered to Bismarck, the army attempted to disarm the National Guard that had been mobilized to defend Paris. They are unsuccessful and have to retreat leaving the city in the hands of the National Guard.

Paris Commune History of the Paris Commune (718) After the retreat of the French Army, the Paris National Guard establishes the Paris Commune on March 26, 1871. Politics of the Commune The Commune “two month experiment in democratic socialism.” It established: 1) Workers’ cooperatives 2) Instituted universal free education 3) Separated Church and State 4) Abolish abusive labor practices

Paris Commune Reaction of French State: Brutally Repress Commune (718) The French systematically reclaimed Paris, executing any prisoners that were taken. In retaliation, the Parisians to also executed prisoners. Paris Death Toll After several weeks of fighting, often street by street, culminating in the s0-called “Bloody Week” (May 21-28) roughly 25,000 Parisians were dead, most of which were shot after surrendering.

Paris Commune Nature of Parisian Resistance: How did the residents of Paris organize themselves to resist the French Army? Social Networks and Social Movements SM may spring form existing social networks, SM activity also creates networks and social connections. Prevailing wisdom: informal networks get people involved, but they fade in importance once a formal SM network is created.

Paris Commune Paris Commune: Neighborhood Networks (719) The organization of the Paris Commune suggests something different: the National Guard battalions fighting the French were organized by neighborhood, and the informal neighborhood structure helped sustain the formal National Guard structure throughout the fighting.
