1 WELCOME: BECOMING A TRUSTEE – ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW!

2 We are looking for 2 trustees with the following knowledge or skills: In-depth Sector Experience and historic CEO / Board / Chair leadership Advanced practical, policy & strategic knowledge of the charitable sector Understanding of Funders, commissioning frameworks, DforE, DforH & LA and funding dynamics. Experience of UK wide / Country wide service delivery within Youth Services CEO, Professional or Board level Third Sector experience - Children & Young People Understanding of young people under 25 Passion, proactive commitment and enthusiasm for children & young people and the voluntary sector * Beneficiary representation & an understanding of the challenges facing children & young people today. Active previous involvement in the Voluntary sector is preferable. *This may be a young person between 18 and 25 who has first hand knowledge of the issues facing young people under 25.To be clear we completely understand that young people may not have held jobs previously, and this is not a barrier. We are after a dynamic individual (who may themselves be under 25) who has a passion for supporting children and young people and can evidence this through previous active and voluntary participation

3 About Get Connected Get Connected is the free, confidential helpline service providing emotional support and signposting information to any young person under 25 in the UK who needs help but doesn’t know where to turn. Our vision is that every young person under 25 in the UK can find the help they need to support their physical and emotional wellbeing. Our mission is to serve as the home of help and support for young people, providing a free, confidential, multi-channel helpline service that enables young people to find the help they seek for any problem, when they need it and via the method of communication most comfortable to the individual. Our outcomes: 1. Young people have accessed support 2. Young people's life chances are improved 3. Young people feel more positive about seeking help

4 700,000 Get Connected was set up in 1999 by a partnership between the Suzy Lamplugh Trust and the British Transport Police, with support from Railway Children. The aim was to provide help to young people under 25 who had run away from home or been thrown out. Since we began we have supported over 700,000 children and young people. Get Connected is now the only UK wide free, confidential helpline service for young people under 25 who need help, but don't know where to turn. We are the home of help & emotional support for young people, enabling them to identify their need and find free confidential help - whenever they need it, however they want it, no matter what the issue

5 We deal with ANY issue, including: Abuse and violence | Bulling, harassment and discrimination Citizenship and cultural issues | Crime, the law and your rights Drink, drugs and addictions | Families and care | Feelings and mental health Gender and sexual identity | Harming yourself | Housing and homelessness Physical health | Sex, relationships and pregnancy | Work, education and money

8 What do Trustees do? The Board of Trustees is ultimately responsible for the charity, including strategic development and policy. The Board is also responsible for: The financial arrangements of Get Connected Ensuring the workings of the charity are within relevant legislation Formulating and approving the strategic plan Supporting and advising the Chief Executive, who is responsible for other employees and helpline workers We don’t: do not make operational or day-to-day decisions about the running of the charity or the helpline – these are made by the employees, led by the Chief Executive. Members of the Board of Trustees do, however, share their expertise with the employees to assist and support the day-to-day work.

9 When, where, what? Board meetings take place every 2 months, at Get Connected offices. Papers are sent out in advance for review Two Trustee-led Sub-Committees also support the Board of Trustees: Finance Sub-Committee and the Governance Working Group I’m interested what next? Your application should outline why you feel you would be a positive addition to the Get Connected Board, provide details of relevant experience, your CV & provide two references. Following submission of your application, if Get Connected would like to take your application further, you will be contacted in the first instance by Fiona Nicolson one of our Trustees by telephone. You will then be invited to an interview with the Chairman of Get Connected and one other Trustee and/or CEO. Prior to the interview, if you have not already done so, we would be pleased to arrange for an informal meeting with Jessica. Following a successful first interview, your references will be contacted and subject to these being satisfactory, a second and final interview may take place with two other members of the Get Connected Board.
