3 rd Degree Burn

Backstory Once upon a time, a boy named Jimmy was just walking along minding his own business. He sensed something around him, but he didn’t see anything different. Suddenly, a spaceship appeared! Jimmy was dumbfounded by the sight before him, but not for long, because the spaceship began shooting fireballs at him! He dodged them and dodged them until the spaceship finally landed and a squad of aliens came charging out of it. They swarmed Jimmy, and that’s when he knew. That’s when he knew… He had to go straight savage on these extra terrestrials. He fought them with his bare hands mercilessly, and believe me, they put up a good fight! After a very long time, Jimmy was battling the very last alien. He was exhausted, but he kept going until it was finally defeated. Once it was over, he turned away from the battle scene and triumphantly went on his way. Then he accidentally tripped and fell into a camp fire.

Treatment Intubation for breathing, ECMO for oxygenation Early cleaning and debriding- removing dead skin and tissue from the burned area (Reconstructive Surgeon) Fluid Resuscitation- Intravenous (IV) fluids containing electrolytes and/or antibiotics. (Anesthesiologist) A warm, humid environment for the burn (Burn Room) Pain medications administered (Anesthesiologist) Skin grafting-closure of the wounded area Functional and cosmetic reconstruction (Reconstructive Surgeon)

Recovery In the recovery process the burn therapist of the patient has to help maintain the persons ability to continue daily life before the incident. Some daily activities include Passive ROM (Range of Motion) therapy to help maintain the body’s ability to move... The Therapist must also keep the person calm and confident that they will be able to resume life after the incident. The patients must also be educated about their wounds and they need to know what they can and cannot do after they leave the care of the hospital.

Levels of Skin Affected 3 rd degree burns go through the epidermis and dermis.

Pain 3 rd degree burns go through the dermis and destroy the nerve endings. Thus, there is little to no pain in the burn area.

Body Systems Affected Cardiovascular/Respiratory- The blood vessels contained in the dermis would get damaged, and lack of oxygen could occur because of breathing in smoke. Immune- The lymph vessels the help get rid of waste would get harmed. Muscular- Tendons and muscles may get burned slightly, but no serious damage occurs. Skeletal- The bones may be somewhat charred, but there would not be an lasting damage, if any damage occurs in the first place.
