When is the assessment? Year 7 – Between 1st-12th June Year 8 – Between 1st-12th June How long is the assessment? You will sit two separate assessments: 1 x 45 minute reading assessment 1 x 45 minute writing assessment

Year 7 and 8 Summer Assessments What will I need to do in the reading assessment?
You will be given two extracts to read. You will need to read the extracts and answer three questions. The extracts: Source A: 21st Century Non-fiction newspaper article Source B: 19th Century Literary non-fiction article Both extracts are approximately 1 side of A4 in length. These are “unseen” – don’t worry, you are not expected to have seen them before.

Year 7 and 8 Summer Assessments What will I need to do in the reading assessment?
The three questions: Question 1: This will be a true or false question based on Source A. You will be given seven brief statements and you need to identify the four statements which are true. Question 2: You will now be asked to refer only to Source B (the 19th century literary text). You will be asked ‘How does the writer use language to describe ________________? You should answer this question using PEE. Question 3: You will be asked to refer to the whole of Source A together with the whole of Source B. You will be asked to ‘Compare how the writers convey different experiences of ________________? You will be given a planning table which will help you answer the question. You should answer this question using PEECEEL

PEE Point – make a clear point which answers the question
Evidence – use a quotation from the text that supports your point. Write it in quotation marks. Explain – explain what your evidence shows. Pick out key words and key techniques. Analyse the words as fully as possible. What do they show/suggest? Don’t forget to identify techniques used: simile, metaphor, connective, second person pronoun, superlative, comparative, etc

P – Make a clear, specific and concise (don’t waffle). Use correct terms Ev – Short evidence that backs up your point Ex – CLEAR explanation of the effects of this feature. How/why has this feature been used? C - Similarly/Equally/Likewise OR Contrastingly, In direct contrast, Conversely L - One sentence – Both texts show… OR Whereas the girl described in source A is …., the girl described in source B is clearly …

You will be given a brief statement. You will be asked to ‘write a letter in which you persuade the audience for OR against the opinion expressed in the statement. You will be marked on: CONTENT Communicated in a convincing way Used appropriate tone, style and register Used varied and ambitious vocabulary with a range of linguistic devices ORGANISATION Highly structured and developed writing Linked paragraphs with a range of connectives ACCURACY Full range of punctuation Used a variety of sentences (simple, compound and complex) Used Standard English Writing and spelling is accurate

How can I revise? Complete all class and homework tasks to the best of your ability Read non-fiction – magazines, newspapers, letters. Practise PEEing! Practise persuasive writing.
