3 Scheme of work continued
WEEK 8 REVISION Revision of the past topics taught during the term making use of past questions WEEK 9 EXAMINATION

4 WORLD POPULATION DEFINITION: : _ Population is defined as the number of people living in an area at a particular time. SIZE OF WORLD POPULATION : -World population estimate[4.5 billion people,1982] -1990 [5.2 billion people] -World average growth rate [2.3%] -By year 2000 [6.2 billion people] IN TERMS OF CONTINENTS: -Asia [the most populous];Europe [second];Africa[third]; ;North America[fourth];Australia[sixth]. IN TERMS OF COUNTRIES: -China [most populous,1.3billion people] -India[second, 1.0 billion e.t.c]

5 POPULATION CONCEPTS [1]OVER POPULATION:
-Over population is a situation where a country has more people than its physical and human resources . Or, -it is a situation where the population exceeds the available resources of the country ;if the people are to enjoy highest possible standard. [2]UNDER POPULATION : -Under population is a situation, in which the size of the population is consider too small to fully utilize the available resources

6 Population concept contd
[3]OPTIMUM POPULATION: -Optimum population is a situation in which the number of people can be supported by the available resources in the area ,so as to achieve the highest possible standard of living. [4]POPULATION DENSITY: -Population density is the number of people per. Unit area, and recorded as X number of people per. Sq.km. Formula: Pop Density = Total Population land area

7 Population concept contd
Land Area : Total Population Population Density Total Population : Population Density * Land Area. BIRTH RATE: It is the rate at which children are being giving birth to in a country otherwise known as natality. DEATH RATE: It refers to the rate at which people, both adult and children die in a country otherwise known as Mortality. GROWTH RATE: This is determined by the rate of birth, death and population movement in the country [inward and outward]. Formulae:-pop growth=[BR-DR]+[I-E] or BR-DR + NM BR=Birth Rate, DR =Death Rate, I=Immigration, E=Emigration , NM=Net Migration.

8 Population concept contd
AGE AND SEX STRUCTURE: The age structure of a population is a relative proportion of children, adults and old people in a population. The sex structure or ratio is a relative proportion of males and females in a population. Note: Information about age and sex structure is expressed in form of population pyramids. DEPENDENCY RATIO: Dependency Ratio means the number of dependants expressed as proportion or percentage of the working age population The population of a country is usually divided into two groups. [1] Working Age population [15 to 65 years old], [2] The Dependants[children below 15 years and the elderly above 65 years]

9 FACTORS OF POPULATION DISTRIBUTION PATTERNS
Factors of population growth can be broadly classified into physical and human factors. [a] Physical Factors: Climate , Availability of water, Relief, Soil, Presence of mineral resources. [b] Human Factors: Agriculture, Religious Beliefs/cultural Factors, Industrial/trade/commerce ,Immigration, Transport network , Improved social amenities.

10 PATTERNS OF WORLD POPULATION DISTRIBUTION
Population is not uniformly distributed through out the world. The pattern of world population distribution is grouped into three namely [a]DENSELY POPULATED AREAS: ---Industrial North West Europe ---Industrial North East USA ---Agricultural Monsoon Asia ---The Nile Valley and Delta [b] MODERATELY POPULATED PARTS OF THE WORLD: ---Cold Temperate Regions of Europe, Asia and other parts of USA. ---Tropical Temperate Grassland of Southern Russia, Prairies [N/America], Sudan savanna belt of West Africa. ---Africa and most parts of South East Asia.

11 PATTERN OF WORLD POP DISTRIBUTION CONTD
[C] THE SPARSELY POPULATED AREAS: Cold Land Hot Deserts High Mountains The thick dense forest.

12 REASONS FOR RAPID GROWTH OF WORLD POPULATION
. The world population has been growing at a rapid rate for the past few decades:. REASONS FOR THIS ARE; [A ] Improved medical care [B] Advanced Technology and Industry [c] Others: Polygamy, early marriage, Lack of family planning, Illiteracy, Child bearing, Traditional function of women.

13 ASSIGNMENT FOR WEEK 1 [1] Define population
[2] Write short notes on any five population concepts. [3] Calculate the population density of a country “X” whose population is 12,000,000[m] and Land Area is km sq. Explain four physical and four human factors that affect population distribution patterns. Draw the world population map on a cardboard paper.
