3  Artificial method used for feeding in addition to breast feeding or alone.  Formula can be easily prepared by mother or nurse.  Formula composition is similar to breast milk but do not replace it.  Iron fortified formula is recommended by all pediatrician nowadays.

4 I. Provide infant with adequate fluid and caloric intake for appropriate growth. II. Supplement breast feeding with formula. III. Give additional fluid intake between feedings.

5  The nipple should be plain, bulb ended with flange on base not soft and not to firm.  It has3 holes and number of drops when bottle is upside down should be about 16 per minute.  Bottle should be plain, graduated, wide opening,made of glass or Pyrex.

7  Feeding bottle contains Formula milk (prepared according company instructions)  Nipple  Tissue  Gown or apron

8 RationalNursing Action - Reduce transmission of micro-organism 1- Perform hand washing 2-Take standard precautions and prepare the feeding bottle - Test the milk temperature and flow of milk letting a few drops fall on inner side of the wrist 3-Warm formula to body temperature by placing it in pan of water at 48 C for 10 minutes - Check the intake and output chart 4- Check the infant formula name and amount before the feeding - Do not contaminate the bubble of the nipple 5-Take the bottle to the bedside and put on gown or apron

10 RationalNursing Action -to direct the infant toward the bottle 6-Place bib under infant chin. - To prevent aspiration7-Hold infant in nearly up-right position with his head above the crook elbow.If contraindicated raise head only. -Be comfortable and relax during feeding 8-Induce sucking reflex by placing the nipple over lips, infant will soon grasp it. -do not leave infant with empty bottle 9-Hold nipple at right angle to infants mouth so that the neck of bottle is always filled with milk.

12 RationalNursing Action -pull the nipple and put you’re the tip of finger gently remove it 10-Take nipple out of mouth slowly -to get ride of gases and prevent colic 11-Burp the infant during and after the feeding -if the infant vomited he would not aspirate 12-Wip infant mouth with the tissue, place infant in curdle on his right side with head elevated foe 20 minutes

13 RationalNursing Action -Time saving -Feeding time should not exceed 30 minutes - Reduce transmission of micro -organism 13-remove gown or apron and replace articles so all are ready for next feeding 14- wash the bottle with soap and water and boil it 15-Record on the chart: * type and amount of formula taken *length of feeding time *how feeding was tolerated * any regurgitation or emesis 16-Perform hand washing

15  In pot put all plastic or Pyrex bottle except nipple.  Fill the pot with water  Boil it for 15 minutes or according to manufactures instructions  In the last 3 minutes add the nipple  Take the bottle out on stand or towel to dry
