3 What is a Blog?  An online journal  Information that is instantly published to a website  Frequent and chronological publication of comments and thoughts on the web  Often readers and participants may add comments as well

4 Outside School Examples  Social networking sites (myspace, facebook) facebook Pros – keep up with friends, meet new people, share news/information instantly Cons – too much personal information, information contains bias, opinion, or is inappropriate, no monitoring means anything can go  Many free, un-monitored online services such as blogspot.com, blogger.com

5 The School Reality for Blogs  Blogging is new territory in most schools  Most blogs or blogging sites and services will be blocked by your school’s firewall  You will likely be limited to a monitored service unless your district subscribes to a service that provides blogs  Many schools object to teachers using non- monitored blogging services Lawsuits, parent complaints, media feasts

6 In-School Examples  In School, any kind of online communication falls into the blogging category Discussion boards, monitored chats, listservs, etc.  Monitored blogs gaggle.net (subscription) Keypals.com (free, create account)  School web development systems  Blackboard.com and other online discussion tools  Lab management software (synchroneyes, schoolvue, etc. )

7 Blogging Tools  Blackboard.com Blackboard.com  Epals.com (requires subscription)  Gaggle Student Email Service  Moodle  Software can be purchased to create and track blog activity and comments posted to your blog (ex: Adobe Contribute)  Many teachers use a webpage like a blog but this does not allow comments and feedback from readers easily

12 The School Reality for Podcasting  In education, the posting of any audio file online is considered podcasting  Most teachers do not provide the rss feed for their podcasts  Blogging and podcasting are part of teen real world  Excitement and interest when used at school
