Things to Note While Looking at a Course

1. Does it give priority to day vs. evening students?

Registration Priorities (For LAWJ courses only) 01-04: priority to full-time students 07, 17, 27, & 97: priority to part-time students All other sections give equal priority Example: LAWJ-089-08 gives equal priority to day and evening students

2. Is it Cross-Listed? A green “X” means a course is cross-listed. JD students may only enroll in the “LAWJ” section. LLM students may only enroll in the “LAWG” section.

3. When Does it Meet? If a course has irregular meeting times, it will be noted in the course description.

4. What Type of Final Requirement Does it Have? A course will require a paper, take-home exam, in-class exam, or special requirement.

5. Are There Registration Requirements? Pre-requisite courses, mandatory attendance requirements, and other restrictions will be listed.

Write Down the CRN You will need the Course Reference Number (CRN) when you enter your pre-registration in MyAccess. The CRN for the course above is 14621.

Basics of Pre-Registration You will rank courses based on how much you want them The system will attempt to register you for courses in order Students will be enrolled by class division (third-years then second-years then first- years) You can pick an alternate for each rank

Prioritizing Strategies The online request form allows you to list your course priorities from 1st through 7th. On each priority line, you may list a primary request and an alternate. The course scheduling program will read alternate courses only if it cannot satisfy the associated primary request (if Primary Request #1 is unavailable, Alternate Request #1 will be processed as if it were Primary Request #1, and so on).

Strategy 1 – Basic Strategy As a basic strategy, the Office of the Registrar recommends that you list the same courses as your 1 st Alternate and 2 nd Primary choices. This allows the course scheduling program to give a 1 st choice preference to a 2 nd choice course if it is unable to satisfy the 1 st Primary choice. The same method should be used for the 2 nd Alternate and 3 rd Primary choices and so on. The course scheduling system will first schedule either your Primary or Alternate 1 st choice followed by your Primary or Alternate 2 nd choice and so on until your schedule is filled.

Strategy 2 – Specific Course/Any Section Option This strategy is for students who prefer a specific professor, but in reality will take any section of a desired course. For the 1 st Primary selection, a student will select a specific section of a course. In the 1 st Alternate selection, you should select a second section of the same course and then also choose the “Any Section” flag. This will allow you to be eligible for enrollment in any section of the desired course. Note: Once you are enrolled in your alternate section, any lower ranked course in day/time conflict will be skipped. Carefully consider whether you want to use the any section option if there is a lower ranked course you are eager to take.

Strategy 3 – Time Conflicts/Mutually Exclusive You would use this strategy if you want Course A or Course B, which meet at the same time or are mutually exclusive. Note: Please be aware that you may request courses with time conflicts or that are mutually exclusive. However, once you are enrolled in a course, you will not be enrolled in any lower ranked course(s) with a time conflict or a mutually exclusive course within the same semester. You may be enrolled in a fall course that is mutually exclusive with a spring course through the fall Add/Drop period. However, if you are still enrolled in the fall course by the end of the fall Add/Drop period, the spring course that is mutually exclusive will be dropped from your schedule.

Strategy 4 – Prioritizing Year-Long Courses in the Spring. You should use one of the strategies listed above for most of your Spring 2015 courses. For a year-long course, you should list the spring section with low priority. If you are awarded a seat in the fall section of this year-long course you will be guaranteed a seat in the spring section. There is no need to use a high priority slot in your spring pre- registration requests for the spring section of a year-long course.

You may enter a course on your pre-registration screen by clicking the “Add to list” button on the course listing page.

Once you have completed your pre-registration requests for the semester, be sure to review all errors and/or warnings at the bottom of the screen.

Errors & Warnings Time Conflict - Potential time conflict with the courses listed. You may request courses with time conflicts. However, once you are enrolled in the higher priority course, you will not be enrolled in any lower priority courses with a time conflict. Duplicate Course - You have requested more than one section of a course. You may request duplicate courses. However, once you are enrolled in one section of a course, you will not be enrolled in any lower priority courses with a different section in the same semester. Maximum Load - Your requests exceed your maximum credit limit. You may request courses that exceed your credit limit. However, you will not be enrolled in more courses than your maximum credit limit. Permission Required - Professor Permission Course. Note: Professor permission courses are enrolled first and will prevent enrollment in any other course that overlaps, even a higher priority course. Prerequisite Not Met - This course has a prerequisite that you have not taken. Waivers for Fall 2015 courses must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on June 5 by e-mail to lawreg@law.georgetown.edu. You will be permitted to enroll in a spring course that requires a prerequisite, but, if by the end of the fall Add/Drop period you have not enrolled in or obtained a waiver from the professor for the prerequisite course, the spring course will be dropped from your schedule.) Mutually Exclusive - This course is mutually exclusive with the course listed. You may request mutually exclusive courses. However, once you are enrolled in a higher priority course, you will not be enrolled in any lower priority courses in the same semester that are mutually exclusive. Department Restriction - You tried to enroll in the wrong section of a cross listed course; JD students may only enroll in the LAWJ section and LLM students may only enroll in the LAWG section. Note: You will not be permitted to submit your pre-registration requests until you select the correct section of the cross-listed course.

Credit Limits Full-time JD: 12-16, 18 during add/drop *Note: Students enrolled in credits over the maximum limit after add/drop will be withdrawn from the last course in which they enrolled and receive a “W”. Part-time JD: 8-12

Rank professor permission courses and clinics last. (Note: Students will be enrolled in clinics and professor permission courses when the professor provides the list to our office; this may mean you will not be awarded a seat in a time-conflict course.) Rank the spring half of year-long courses last. (Note: Students will be enrolled in spring section on a rolling basis once add/drop is open.) Rank required first year courses last. (Note: Students will be enrolled in June before pre-registration requests are released. Once you are enrolled, you will not be awarded a seat in a time-conflict course.) You can be enrolled in the same course or mutually exclusive courses in the spring & fall but will need to choose by the end of fall add/drop.

Submit Requests by 5pm on June 1
