9 In the Battle of Chaldiran, the Ottomans won. The consequences were: 1) The Safavids lost Eastern Anatolia and most of Iraq permanently. 2) Isma’il went into retirement. He also lost all of his wives, who were sold off to Ottoman officials. 3) The Murshid (Sufi priests) lost power: the Safavids turned towards traditional Shi’ism.

10 Suleiman vs. Tahmasp First campaign: 1532 – 1534 Second Campaign: 1548 – 1549 Third Campaign: 1553 - 1555  Began over a territorial dispute in Bitlis in eastern Anatolia  Governor of Baghdad was assassinated by the Safavids  Ottomans formed an alliance with France  Safavids formed an alliance with Hapsburg Austria  Peace of Amasya defined borders, gave religious privileges to both sides

11 Murad III vs. Mohammed Khodabanda then Abbas I  Ottomans sought to control Azerbaijan and the Caucasus region (Silk Road area, close to Hapsburg Europe trade)  Safavids were weakened by a war with the Uzbeks  Treaty of Istanbul (1590) forced the Safavids to give up most of their holdings in the Caucasus

12 Abbas I vs Murad IV Safi vs Hafiz Ahmed Pasha and Khüsrev Pasha  Started by Abbas, who wanted to retake Azerbaijan  Safavids used ghulam infantry in imitation of Ottoman janissaries  Safavids used “scorched earth policy” after taking Baghdad  Treaty of Zuhab settled borders: Ottomans kept most of Iraq, Safavids received Yerevan and much of Azerbaijan  Ended the Ottoman- Safavid conflict
