2 Table of Contents Introduction (where) Background (what’s the problem)
Contaminants Solutions Applied solution Conclusion

3 Introduction Several villages surround the farm.
Sarney Farm, Dutchess County, New York. Dutchess County Several villages surround the farm. An adjacent swamp provides water for livestock. Bedrock aquifer 3,000 feet from the site is used by 22 residential wells. 3,000 people within a mile radius. 10,000 people within a 3 mile radius. Swift Pond Sarney Farm

4 Site Background Operated as a municipal/industrial landfill (1968-70).
Disposal of drummed and liquid industrial waste into site trenches. Transfer of ownership to the Sarney’s in 1971 ceased disposal. Preliminary investigations showed industrial wastes such as cleaning solvents, inks, acid, water-based glues, and machine oils. Subsurface soils & groundwater at the site are contaminated with Volatile Organic Compounds VOCs

5 Contaminants Air Ground water: Soil
di-n-butylphthalate, vinyl chloride, 1,2-dichloroethane, 2-butanone, trichloroethene, and toluene Soil naphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene, di-n-butylphthalate, butylbenzylphthalate, bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, 2-butanone, trichloroethene, 4-methyl-2-pentanone, and toluene. Air No data available – no tests were carried out.

6 Contaminants effects Contaminated Media Potential receptors
Pathways of Exposure Site soils On-site: residents and trespassers Direct contact with soils, ingestion, inhalation of particulates Offsite residents Inhalation of volatile organic vapors released from soils and suspended solids Surface water and sediments Area residents Direct contact and ingestion during recreational use of pond and downstream drainages Shallow Groundwater Areas residents Direct contact and ingestion from recreational use of water bodies to which groundwater is discharging Bedrock groundwater Residents Ingestion, direct contact, and inhalation of volatiles Soil Vapor Inhalation

7 Remedial action Biodegradation/aeration treatment system
A French drain system Collected and treated leachate Drum excavation (march ) Total of gallons drums, 5525 gallon pails and small “lab pack” excavated and disposed.

8 Remedial action cont’d
Soil excavation Soil excavation August-November 1997 A total of 7,300 cubic yards of soil excavated. Soil Treatment Low Temperature thermal desorption (LTTD) unit was used. Treated soil was used to backfill excavated areas Also two additional sources were used for fill. Treatment using the LTTD was completed & approved in September 1998.

9 Alternative action Fencing of the swamp/ponds, lakes
To prevent the spread of contamination through cattle. Contaminated Groundwater cannot be totally cleaned
