Why do you need energy? Many chemical rxns are happening in your body without you even knowing it. – Macromolecules are broken down or assembled – Molecules are moved across cell membranes – Genetic information is transferred from one place to another All of these examples require ENERGY. All of the chemical rxns in your body are known as METABOLISM.

Before class starts… Turn in your Observing Respiration lab Turn in your Respiration reinforcement paper Get out your September SAT words paper

Getting Started 9-19 Using your September SAT words, write a complete, complex sentence using 2 of the words to describe photosynthesis OR cellular respiration.

Today’s assignments 1/3 of the class at a time will be completing the Interdependence observation lab (20 minute cycles) While you are NOT in the lab area- you need to work on the POGIL that is on the front table Finished with those? Turn them in and work on #16 notes so we can review them at the end of class

How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration related? Notice how the products of photosynthesis BECOME the reactants of respiration?! Plants and animals are interdependent on each other b/c each creates the reactants needed for the other’s processes

Compare the two processes Photosynthesis Light reactions and dark reactions (Calvin) To convert light energy into chemical energy Chloroplasts Cellular respiration Glycolysis, Citric acid cycle, ETC To convert chemical energy into mechanical energy Mitochondria

Compare the two processes Photosynthesis Carbon dioxide + water Glucose + oxygen Plants, algae & some bacteria Cellular Respiration Glucose + oxygen Carbon dioxide + water Animals, bacteria, protists, plants, fungi

Answer this question… How are plants and animal interdependent on each other? Explain on a chemical level.
