1 Ch. 2 sect 4 p. 78-79 1. The French officials demanded a $250,000 bribe during this event. 2. This raised the residence requirement for American citizenship from 5 years to 14 years and allowed the president to deport or jail any alien considered undesirable. 3. This set fines and jail terms for anyone trying to hinder the operation of the government or expressing “false, scandalous, and malicious statements” against the government.

5 ADAMS IS ELECTED -1796 election Adams elected President Jefferson elected V.P. -They were from different political parties -This problem fixed by 12 th Amendment

7 XYZ AFFAIR -Political Parties oppose each other -Federalists align with British (being against the French revolutionaries) -began building navy -Dem-Republicans align with French -nearly leads to war -Convention of 1800 avoids war (adams wants) FR and US nego. Reopened trade. Fr agreed to stop taking US ships/ppl. We are neutral.

8 ALIEN & SEDITION ACTS -Federalists passed laws to limit criticism of gov’t by those sensitive to the French (Dem- Republicans) and restrict citizenship rights Alien & Sedition Act  -would have limited freedom of speech and allowed deportation of unpopular aliens -most immigrants were Dem.Rep. -Violates bill of rights

9 ALIEN & SEDITION ACTS -Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions -issued to declare the Alien & Sedition Acts unconstitutional -Written by Jefferson and Madison (Dem.- Rep.) -passed in two states (never tried to enforce it) -presented idea of nullification – the power of a state to deny federal laws

10 Design “Bumper Stickers” protesting or supporting American military action during the XYZ Affair. Decide if we should or Shouldn’t go to war with France. The bumper sticker must have a slogan and a picture on the bumper sticker and a reference to the XYZ Affair.
