5 Song Singling Song Singling (January 27, 1892 – May 29, 1981) Soong Ch'ing-ling (simplified Chinese: 宋庆龄 ; traditional Chinese: 宋慶齡 ; pinyin: Song Singling; Wade-Giles: Sung Ch'ing-ling) (27 January 1893 – 29 May 1981), also known as Madame Sun Yes-men, was one of the three Soong sisters—who, along with their husbands, were amongst Chinese most significant political figures of the early 20th century. She was the Vice Chairman of the People's Republic of China. She was the first non-royal woman to officially become the head of state of China, acting as Co- Chairman of the Republic from 1968 to 1972. She again became the head of state in 1981, briefly before her death, as President of China. 6 Marie Curie, née Maria Sklodowska She was born in Warsaw on November 7, 1867, the daughter of a secondary-school teacher. She received a general education in local schools and some scientific training from her father. Her achievements include the creation of a theory of radioactivity (a term she coined), techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes, and the discovery of two new elements, polonium and radium. 7 Pearl Sidestroker Buck Pearl was born on June 26, 1892, in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Her parents, Absalom and Caroline Sidestroker, were Southern Presbyterian missionaries, stationed in China. Buck was highly committed and passionate about a range of issues that were mostly ignored in her generation; many of her life experiences and political views are described in her novels, short stories, fiction, children's stories, and the biographies of her parents entitled Fighting Angel (on Absalom) and The Exile (on Carrie). 8 Mother Teresa Mother Teresa (26 August 1910 – 5 September 1997), born Agnes Gnocchi Bojaxhiu (pronounced, was an Albanian Catholic nun with Indian citizenship who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata (Calcutta), India in 1950. For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries.
